For an outdoor TV antenna, the basic job is to choose a safe location and compatible mount, assemble the equipment on the ground, secure the mast according to the mount instructions, route and weather-protect the coax, and ground the installation as required by local rules. The steps below assume a U.S. home, but they are not a substitute for your antenna and mount manuals or local electrical and building requirements. If you cannot work safely around the roof or overhead power lines, hire a qualified installer.
Before you start: check the roof, equipment, and hazards
Read the antenna and mount instructions before buying hardware or climbing onto the roof. Check that the mount is intended for your antenna and mast, that the roof or other attachment point is suitable, and that you have a practical route for the coax into the house. The VOXX Accessories Corporation outdoor antenna safety guide (marked ©2018) notes that higher placement can generally help reception and discusses positioning above the roofline, but height is not a rule to follow at any cost: the roof, wind exposure, mount ratings, access, obstructions, and local requirements all matter.
- Check for overhead power lines and other hazards before beginning. Do not position the antenna or mast where it could reach a line.
- Do not work in windy conditions, and do not use a metal ladder. The VOXX guide states: “Do not use a metal ladder.”
- Plan to assemble as much as possible on the ground with another person. Do not plan a solo roof installation; have a spotter watch from the ground when someone is on the roof.
- If you cannot maintain the clearance recommended by the VOXX guide, or are uncertain whether the work area is safe, stop and seek professional help. Its clearance recommendation is not a replacement for applicable electrical rules.
Choose a mount that suits the structure
Roof-base, universal mast-anchor, tripod, eave, wall, and chimney-strap mounts are documented options in the VOXX guide. They are alternatives, not a ranked list; the right choice depends on the building, antenna, mast, and instructions for the particular hardware.
| Mount type | What to evaluate |
|---|---|
| Roof base | Whether the roof structure and the mount instructions support the proposed attachment and any roof penetrations. |
| Universal mast anchor | Whether the anchor is compatible with the mast and has an appropriate attachment point on the structure. |
| Tripod | Whether the tripod and its attachment method suit the roof and the antenna installation instructions. |
| Eave mount | Whether the eave provides a suitable attachment point and the mount is compatible with the mast. |
| Wall mount | Whether the wall and its attachment method are suitable for the mount and antenna. |
| Chimney-strap mount | Whether the chimney and strap arrangement are suitable for the equipment and exposure at the site. |
For any option, verify compatibility, weather exposure, structural attachment, and whether installation can be done safely. Follow the mount manufacturer’s directions, and check applicable building, electrical, zoning, and other local requirements before drilling or fastening. The guide does not establish universal fastener sizes, spacing, or roof-penetration details.

Assemble and raise the antenna safely
- Assemble as much of the antenna and mast as the product instructions allow while you are on the ground, with a second person helping.
- Recheck the planned lifting path and overhead-line hazards before raising anything. Do not proceed if any part could reach a power line.
- Position and attach the selected mount according to its manufacturer’s instructions and the requirements for the structure. Do not improvise fasteners or attachment points.
- Raise and secure the mast with another person assisting. Tighten the hardware as directed by the mount instructions.
- If the installation calls for guy wires, prepare their anchor bolts before raising the mast and have a second person hold the mast while the wires are attached, as the VOXX guide advises.
Route the coax and protect outdoor connections
Route the antenna lead-in as required by the antenna and building instructions, keeping the run practical for the installation. Cable loss increases with longer runs and higher frequencies, according to Cisco’s general wireless-antenna guidance; that source does not establish a TV-specific cable type, maximum run, or expected reception improvement. Choose cable and components based on the antenna instructions and the actual run rather than assuming one specification fits every installation.
Protect outdoor coax connections from moisture using a product recommended by the antenna manufacturer. Cisco’s enterprise wireless antenna guide recommends coax seal for outdoor connections and advises against silicone sealant or electrical tape for that sealing task. That is general antenna guidance, not a universal instruction for every TV antenna product, so follow the equipment maker’s directions if they differ.

Ground the mast and lead-in under the applicable rules
Grounding is part of the installation, not an optional finishing touch. The VOXX guide describes grounding the mast and placing a grounding unit on the antenna lead-in near where it enters the house, connected to the building’s central ground. The exact components, connections, and method depend on the installation and applicable local requirements; the guide does not supply a universally applicable wiring diagram or conductor specifications.
Confirm requirements with the antenna instructions and the relevant local authority. If you are unsure how the antenna grounding should connect to the building grounding system, ask a qualified electrician. OSHA 29 CFR 1926.408 addresses antenna support structures, conductor clearances, and grounding within the scope of occupational work; it is not a complete homeowner installation manual.

When to hire an installer
Professional installation is the safer choice if roof access is difficult, the structure or mount is uncertain, the job would put the mast near overhead lines, or you cannot confidently handle the grounding and local-code requirements. The VOXX consumer guide specifically recommends professional assistance when a safe installation is uncertain or its recommended distance from wires and other hazards cannot be maintained.
