To sharpen a chainsaw, identify the exact chain, use its specified round file and filing guide, file the cutters evenly on both sides, then check the depth gauges with the matching gauge. Switch off and cool the saw, wear protective gear, secure the bar, and inspect the chain before filing. File size, angles, and depth-gauge settings vary by chain, so do not guess them.

When a chainsaw chain needs attention

Inspect the chain if it produces fine sawdust instead of larger, more uniform chips, pulls to one side, or chatters and bounces in the cut. These signs can indicate dull or uneven cutters; they do not prove that filing alone will fix the problem. Check for damage before sharpening.

Choose the right file and guide

Find the chain pitch and type from the chain markings and the saw or chain manual. STIHL says pitch is marked on the depth-gauge side of each cutter and calls for special saw-chain files; ordinary files have the wrong shape and cut. Match the round file, filing guide, and depth-gauge gauge to the specific chain. STIHL’s materials also list a flat file, filing gauge, marker, and work gloves. A sharpening kit is suitable only if its components match your chain.

Filing angles are chain-specific. Husqvarna describes a general range of 25–35 degrees depending on chain type, but that range is not a universal setting. Use the exact instructions for your chain rather than selecting an angle or file diameter by habit. Husqvarna’s filing guidance explains why a filing gauge helps maintain the intended geometry.

Prepare the saw and inspect the chain

  1. Switch off the saw and let it cool. Wear gloves and eye protection, and clean the chain enough to inspect it.
  2. Check the links, rivets, cutters, and depth gauges for cracks, damage, or excessive wear. STIHL’s manual calls for replacing damaged or worn components rather than treating every chain problem as a filing task.
  3. Secure the guide bar in a stable position and keep the chain snug. Follow the saw’s manual for the chain brake and handling method; instructions vary by model. Husqvarna describes locking the chain using the method specified for its saws.

Hand-file the cutters

  1. Choose a reference cutter and mark it so you know when you have worked around the chain. STIHL suggests using a master tooth; its maintenance guidance also recommends starting with the shortest cutter.
  2. Place the chain-specific round file in the cutter using the matching filing guide. Follow the guide and chain instructions for file position and angle.
  3. Push the file smoothly in the intended forward direction through the cutter, then lift it on the return stroke. Use consistent technique and compare cutters on the same side so their lengths remain even. Do not rely on a fixed stroke count: the number needed depends on cutter condition.
  4. Move around the chain, then reposition the saw as necessary to file cutters facing the opposite direction. Keep the two sides consistent and check that the cutting edges are sharp and the cutters remain uniform.

STIHL’s chain-sharpening guide describes the filing process and the tools it uses. Husqvarna’s academy instructions likewise emphasize chain-dependent angles and using a filing gauge.

Check the depth gauges

Depth gauges control how much material each cutter can take. As cutters are filed shorter, their relationship to the depth gauges changes, so check the gauges during sharpening with a gauge intended for the chain. If the gauge indicates adjustment is needed, use a flat file and follow the tool and chain instructions. Do not lower a depth gauge further once it is at the specified height, and do not set its height by eye.

  • Accuracy: A dulled chain causes the chainsaw user to lean onto the chainsaw tool and press the wood to be cut more firmly, this is not safe and will ultimately lead to an accident. Sharp Pebble electric chain saw sharpener will have your chain sharpened within few passes. This will put less pressure on the chainsaw engine, which in turn ensures that your tool will last longer.

A depth gauge filed too low can increase kickback risk. The STIHL instruction manual warns: “If the saw chain is incorrectly sharpened – and in particular if the depth gauge is set too low – there is a risk of increased kickback of the chainsaw, with resulting danger of injury.” Husqvarna also warns that too large a depth setting increases kickback risk. STIHL’s instruction manual explains the safety concern.

Hand filing or professional service?

Hand filing with the correct guide can maintain chain-specific geometry when you can identify the chain and its settings, and the cutters and links are in sound condition. If you cannot confirm the right file or gauge, the cutters are badly uneven or damaged, or you lack confidence in the setup, ask the manufacturer’s dealer or service channel to assess it. STIHL recommends professional dealer sharpening after repeated hand sharpening; that is STIHL guidance, not a rule established for every brand.

When to replace the chain or get an assessment

  • Replace the chain or damaged components if inspection finds cracks, damaged rivets, or wear beyond the manufacturer’s limit.
  • Seek dealer or service help if the chain type or correct settings are unclear, or if damage and uneven cutters make filing uncertain.
  • Use the saw or chain maker’s service instructions to decide whether hand filing or professional service is appropriate.

STIHL’s maintenance guidance covers sharpening and dealer service, while its manual addresses chain inspection and safety.
