For a potted poinsettia you want to keep, make the main cut in spring after its holiday display fades. Extension recommendations differ: the University of New Hampshire recommends cutting stems to 3–6 inches above the soil in May, while Maryland recommends 3–4 inches in early May. Summer pinching is a separate step that encourages branching. Pruning can help shape a plant, but it does not by itself make the poinsettia rebloom.
When should you prune a potted poinsettia?
Wait until the colorful bracts have faded and the holiday display is over. For a plant being kept for another season, the main cut is generally made in spring. The exact timing and height vary among university extension schedules, so choose one recommendation rather than combining their measurements.
| Guidance | When | Cut height for a potted plant |
|---|---|---|
| University of New Hampshire Extension | May, following reduced watering in early April | 3–6 inches above the soil |
| University of Maryland Extension | Early May | 3–4 inches above the soil |
| University of Connecticut Home Garden Education Office | After the bracts fade | About 8 inches |
These are alternative schedules, not a single universal cut height. This article follows the UNH schedule below; Maryland’s shorter cut and UConn’s higher cut are also published extension recommendations.
How to make the main spring cut
- Check that the display has faded. Make the main cut in spring, rather than cutting a healthy plant back during its holiday display.
- Choose clean, sharp shears or garden snips. They are practical for cutting stems, but the cited extension guidance does not require a particular blade type, cut angle, or named tool.
- Cut the remaining stems to 3–6 inches above the soil. This is the May height recommended by UNH Extension. Do not use this potted-plant measurement for an outdoor landscape poinsettia.
- Consider repotting if needed. UNH identifies this as a suitable time to repot or separate multiple stems. Maryland recommends fresh soilless media when repotting; repotting is a separate care choice, not a pruning requirement.
How summer pinching differs from pruning
The spring cut shortens the old stems. Pinching later removes the tips of new growth to encourage more branches and a fuller, more compact plant. As UNH Extension explains, “This promotes the growth of more branches and ultimately a fuller plant.”

UNH’s pinching schedule
When new shoots are several inches long, remove about the upper inch, leaving four or five leaves on each stem. UNH says a second pinch may be needed in mid-August.
Maryland’s pinching schedule
Maryland Extension advises pinching when new growth reaches 4–5 inches, then pinching again after it grows a further 2–3 inches. Its guidance cautions against pinching after early September if holiday flowering is the goal.

- LONG-LASTING SHARPNESS: Japanese SK5 bypass blade with titanium coating is tested through 5,000 cuts to maintain a sharp edge and deliver clean, consistent cuts on live stems and branches
- BUILT FOR 5X DURABILITY: Heavy-duty 3-layer titanium-coated SK5 blade resists wear and corrosion, while anodized aluminum handles and high-hardness screws reinforce the pruner. Repeated cutting tests show up to 5X the durability of standard pruners
- POWERFUL 4X LEVER CUTTING: The optimized lever-action design multiplies cutting force up to 4X, making thicker branches easier to prune with less hand effort. Cuts branches up to 3/4" with smooth, controlled power for everyday garden pruning
- ARTHRITIS & SENIORS FRIENDLY: Ergonomic non-slip rubber handles cushion pressure and provide a secure, comfortable grip, helping reduce hand and wrist fatigue. A comfortable hand pruner for seniors, arthritis and longer pruning sessions
- ONE-HAND SAFETY LOCK: The easy-access safety lock opens and closes with one hand for faster trimming, then securely holds the blades closed for safer carrying and storage
Either way, stop pinching by early September when you are trying to have the plant flower for the holidays. Repeatedly cutting back late-season growth works against that schedule.
What changes for an outdoor landscape poinsettia?
Do not apply potted-houseplant cut heights to a poinsettia growing in a warm-climate landscape. UF/IFAS guidance for Florida landscapes recommends pruning in early spring, after the floral display and frost danger have passed. It says to cut to 12–18 inches above ground, or back to living tissue if cold has damaged the plant, and to stop pruning after September 10. Those dimensions are for landscape plants, not indoor pots.

What care does a pruned poinsettia need to rebloom?
Pruning is only one part of keeping a poinsettia for another season. UNH recommends a sunny location, watering when the soil feels dry, and fertilizing during the growing season. Its example reblooming schedule calls for complete darkness from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. starting October 9 for a December 18 bloom target. Maryland instead advises at least 14 hours of darkness each day through Thanksgiving and warns that even a small light leak can delay flowering.
Those are source-specific schedules, not a guarantee of bloom. The practical distinction is that autumn darkness must be uninterrupted; ordinary room or outdoor light during the dark period can interfere with the flowering schedule. Use one complete schedule rather than treating pruning alone as a reblooming trigger.

Which pruning approach should you use?
- Keeping a potted plant and following UNH’s schedule: make the main cut in May to 3–6 inches above soil, then pinch new growth during summer and stop by early September for holiday reblooming.
- Following Maryland’s schedule: cut to 3–4 inches in early May, repot into fresh soilless media if you are repotting, and pinch new growth in stages before early September.
- Following UConn’s guidance: cut to about 8 inches after the bracts fade, then pinch summer tips.
- Growing a Florida landscape poinsettia: use UF/IFAS’s outdoor guidance, not indoor-pot measurements.
