Choose a method for the result you want
The best approach depends on whether you want a leaf to lie flat, stay flexible, retain its original shape, or dry quickly. The timings below are the process times described by the cited sources, not promises about how long a preserved leaf will last.

How to press leaves flat
Pressing is the simplest choice for a leaf you plan to frame. Purdue Extension identifies pressing as useful when plant material is essentially flat, including autumn leaves.
- Choose leaves before they become badly curled or brittle.
- Arrange them between layers of absorbent paper, keeping leaves flat and separated.
- Place the stack under a heavy, flat object, such as a weight or book.
- Allow about three weeks to dry. If the paper becomes damp, replace it; handle fragile leaves as little as possible.
Once a leaf is fully flat and dry, you can frame it or use it in a card. Oregon State University Extension also mentions laminating a dried leaf. Pressing dries the leaf; it does not leave it leathery and pliable.

How to seal leaves between waxed paper
Wax-paper heat pressing is a convenient craft option when you want a flexible leaf with fall color. Clemson Cooperative Extension describes the method as preserving flexibility and fall colors; the Ontario Science Centre gives a practical sealing procedure.
- Place the leaf between two sheets of waxed paper.
- Cover the paper sandwich with a towel.
- With an iron at medium temperature, press through the towel. Check after about three minutes, then continue until the waxed paper has sealed around the leaf.
- Let the sandwich cool before handling it.
An adult should handle the iron or closely supervise children during this step.

When glycerin is the right choice
Glycerin is for foliage that needs to stay soft and pliable, not for keeping vivid red, orange, or yellow fall color. UF/IFAS says glycerin-treated foliage turns brown. Mississippi State University Extension also warns that fall-colored deciduous leaves may detach before they absorb enough solution.
Stem treatment
For suitable cut foliage, UF/IFAS describes placing stems two to four inches deep in a solution of one part glycerin to two parts water. The liquid is absorbed gradually; treatment commonly takes two to three weeks and can take longer.

Immersion for some materials
UF/IFAS also describes submerging some plant materials in a one-to-one mixture of water and glycerin for about two weeks, or until the material changes color. This is not a guarantee that every kind of leaf will take up the solution successfully.
Mississippi State Extension recommends mature foliage for better results. In humid display conditions, finished leaves can weep glycerin, so consider the display environment before choosing this method.

When to use silica gel
Silica gel is an option when speed and retaining a leaf’s form and color matter more than keeping the process simple. Purdue Extension gives a usual drying time of two to seven days and notes that the crystals can be dried and reused. UF/IFAS describes silica gel as fast acting and useful for color retention.
Use an airtight container to keep the silica gel effective. For one or a few basic flat leaves, paper pressing avoids the extra drying medium and setup.

Why preserved leaves do not keep color forever
Leaf color varies with its pigments and autumn conditions. The Ontario Science Centre explains that chlorophyll contributes green, carotenoids and flavonoids contribute yellow and orange, and anthocyanins produce red, purple, and magenta under certain conditions. A preservation method cannot restore pigment that has already been lost.
The cited sources do not establish a universal lifespan for preserved leaves or a controlled comparison across species, light exposure, humidity, and storage conditions. Choose a method for the form and finish you want, and treat color retention as variable rather than permanent.
