Routine pruning is not required, but selective trimming can improve a plant’s shape or remove brown leaves.
When to prune a prayer plant
Pruning is optional. The Royal Horticultural Society says Maranta leuconeura requires no pruning as part of routine care. If your plant has become leggy or has damaged, brown foliage, selective trimming is an option. The University of Maryland Extension’s April 24, 2026 response to a question about a leggy ‘Lemon-Lime’ Maranta recommends starting with just one or two of the longest stems and watching how the plant responds.
How to prune a prayer plant in 4 steps

Choose stems and prepare clean shears
Identify the longest or least tidy stems first. Use sharp, clean pruning shears, and plan to make only a few cuts at the outset. You do not need to prune every stem or shape the plant all at once.

Locate a node and cut the stem
Look along the stem for a small, brown, swollen bump. The University of Maryland Extension identifies this as a node. Make the cut so the node remains on the plant; the expert says new leaves should emerge from it. The guidance does not specify an exact distance from the node, so avoid cutting it off.

Prune conservatively
Start with one or two of the longest stems, then observe the plant before making additional cuts. The University of Maryland Extension expert advises removing no more than 30% of the foliage. That figure is advice for the case addressed in the extension response, not a universal threshold established by a pruning study.

Remove brown leaves and decide whether to propagate
Trim brown leaves from their stems. If you want to try propagating a removed stem, the University of Maryland Extension response suggests placing it in water; roots may grow from the nodes, but this is not guaranteed. The Royal Horticultural Society lists basal cuttings, division, or seed as propagation methods, while North Carolina State Extension lists root cuttings.

Care after pruning
Pruning can address appearance, but it does not by itself establish why a plant has become leggy. North Carolina State Extension describes Maranta leuconeura as a tropical evergreen commonly grown as a houseplant and recommends bright, indirect light. It also notes that the plant is intolerant of direct sunlight and low humidity. Avoid leaving water standing on the crowns: University of Illinois Extension warns that this can cause stems to rot.
