For light surface rust, first remove soil and sap, then gently rub the rust with coarse-grade steel wool or lump pumice. Clear away residue, dry every metal surface thoroughly, and apply a light coat of tool oil or rust inhibitor. Cleaning and rust removal do not disinfect shears; if you have cut diseased plants, sanitize the tool separately using guidance suited to the pathogen.
How to remove light rust from pruning shears
- Remove dirt and sap. Brush or wipe off loose soil and debris. Clean away sap before working on the metal; a small stiff-bristle brush can help with debris, but it is not a disinfectant.
- Rub the rust gently. Use coarse-grade steel wool or lump pumice on the affected areas, following Wisconsin Extension’s general garden-tool maintenance guidance. Work carefully near the cutting edge and finished surfaces: abrasives can scratch metal, and scratches may become places where rust returns. The guidance does not specify a universal grit or method, so avoid aggressive scrubbing.
- Clean off residue and dry. Remove any remaining abrasive and loosened rust, then dry all metal thoroughly. Moisture left on the shears can contribute to renewed rust.
- Protect the metal. Once the metal is clean, rust-free, and dry, wipe on light tool oil or another rust inhibitor. Oil helps protect the surface; it does not remove rust.
This method is for light surface rust. The available Extension guidance does not establish when corrosion is too severe to restore or how abrasives interact with every blade coating. For a heavily corroded tool, coated blade, or model that needs disassembly, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for that exact pruner.

Cleaning is different from disinfecting
Cleaning removes soil, sap, and debris; disinfecting targets plant pathogens. As Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advises, “Always remove dirt, sap, and other debris from pruning equipment before disinfecting.” A clean-looking or rust-free blade is not necessarily disinfected.
If the shears have contacted diseased plant material, clean them first and then choose a sanitizer based on the plant and suspected pathogen. Sanitizer contact times and handling instructions vary, so follow the current product label and applicable Extension advice rather than treating one method as universal.

- TOUGHER THAN THE TOUGHEST RUST: Easy to use spray gel that clings to iron, steel and other metals to remove rust fast
- DISSOLVES RUST IN MINUTES: Powerful formula dissolves medium to light rust in 10 to 30 minutes or less; heavier rust may need an additional application
- NO SCRUBBING NEEDED: Just rinse & wipe to create an ideal surface for painting
- EXCELLENT CLING: Thick gel enables formula to stay active on metal longer
- TRANSFORMS SURFACES: To like-new condition
Alcohol for some sanitation situations
Iowa State identifies 70% isopropyl alcohol or ethanol as a readily available option that does not require a prolonged soak. However, the same guidance cautions that rubbing alcohol may not effectively disinfect pruning tools from certain pathogens. It specifically says not to rely on alcohol for apple trees infected with fire blight; use the bleach guidance it recommends for that situation. Alcohol is a sanitizer option, not a rust remover.
Bleach and corrosion risk
Iowa State’s instructions for its bleach method are to mix one part bleach with nine parts water, adding bleach to the water; use the mixture within two hours; soak blades for at least 10 minutes; and rinse with clean water to reduce corrosion. Other Extension instructions differ: UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions gives a 30-minute soak for its 10% solution, while the UF/IFAS Baker County handout describes replacing solution at least every ten plants or every two hours. These directions should not be collapsed into a single protocol. Follow the current guidance that applies to your situation and the disinfectant’s label. Bleach can corrode metal; when instructions call for rinsing, rinse, dry the shears, and protect the metal with oil afterward.
