A basement can protect plants through winter, but the right method depends on what you are overwintering. Keep tender plants alive as houseplants with suitable warmth and light, store some bulbs and tubers dormant in a cool, dark place, or keep hardy perennials dormant in their pots. First identify the plant and measure the basement’s temperature; one basement setting will not suit every plant.
Choose the right overwintering method
Before moving anything downstairs, identify whether it needs to keep growing, can rest while still potted, or can be stored as a dormant underground structure. These approaches have different requirements for light, temperature, and moisture.
| Plant or form | Winter approach | Basement conditions to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Tropical or semi-tropical plant that cannot tolerate frost | Keep it alive as a houseplant | Suitable warmth and species-appropriate light; a cold, dark basement may not work. Iowa State University Extension |
| Tender perennial with a bulb, corm, rhizome, or tuber | Lift and store the storage organ dormant | Usually cool and dark, but the safe temperature and moisture level depend on the plant. Iowa State University Extension |
| Hardy perennial left in its pot | Keep the container plant dormant | UNH Extension recommends an unheated basement, garage, or shed held at 30–40°F. UNH Extension |
Check the basement before you bring plants in
Measure the temperature over time rather than assuming the basement stays steady. Check for cold spots and temperature swings, and make sure a location intended for above-freezing storage does not freeze. A basement that is suitable for dormant potted perennials may be too cold for a living tropical plant or too warm for a particular stored tuber.
For living plants, assess light as well as temperature. Iowa State recommends bright, indirect light for houseplants brought indoors and supplemental lighting if the available location is too dim. Dormant bulbs and tubers, by contrast, are stored in darkness. Iowa State University Extension

Keep tender plants alive as houseplants
Bring them in and inspect them
Move tender plants indoors before a hard freeze. Check leaves and stems for insects or disease before placing them near other houseplants. Keep returning plants separate from established indoor plants to reduce the chance of spreading pests. University of Minnesota Extension
Adjust light, water, and feeding
Place live plants in a location with the light their species needs, away from drafts. If the basement is too dim, use supplemental light; do not assume dormant-storage darkness is acceptable for a plant you intend to keep growing. Water when the soil is dry rather than following the outdoor summer schedule. Iowa State horticulture specialist Aaron Steil advises: “Stop fertilizing plants in the fall and winter months, as they are not actively growing this time of year.” Iowa State University Extension, updated October 1, 2026

Store bulbs, corms, rhizomes, and tubers dormant
Lift and prepare the storage organs
- Cut back the foliage around the killing frost, following plant-specific instructions.
- Carefully dig up the bulb, corm, rhizome, or tuber, remove excess soil, and label it so you can identify it later.
- Let it dry as appropriate for that plant. Pack it in a suitable container or material, such as a cardboard box, plastic crate, paper or mesh bag, peat moss, shredded newspaper, sand, or vermiculite. Iowa State lists these as options, not a single recipe for every species. Iowa State University Extension
- Store it in the plant’s recommended temperature range, in darkness. Keep packing material from becoming so wet that it encourages rot or mold, but check that the storage organ is not shriveling from excessive dryness.
- Inspect periodically and remove pieces that are rotting or dried out.
Use plant-specific temperatures
These examples from Iowa State University Extension show why a single basement temperature cannot serve every stored plant:
| Plant | Recommended storage temperature |
|---|---|
| Dahlia tubers | 40–50°F |
| Caladium corms | 60–65°F |
| Elephant-ear corms or tubers | 55–60°F |
| Canna rhizomes | 40–50°F |
| Gladiolus corms | 35–45°F |
These are examples from one extension source, not a complete guide to every plant or cultivar. Caladium corms need frequent checks because they can dry out. Confirm the guidance for the specific plant before choosing a storage spot. Iowa State University Extension

Keep hardy perennials dormant in their pots
For dormant container perennials, UNH Extension says an unheated basement, garage, or shed held between 30°F and 40°F can work. Water the plants periodically when the storage temperature rises above 40°F. This recommendation is for dormant perennials left in containers; it is not a general temperature prescription for tropical houseplants or lifted bulbs and tubers. UNH Extension
Prevent pests from spreading indoors
Inspect plants before bringing them into the home and keep them apart from established houseplants while you monitor them. If you use a pesticide, follow its label, including directions on indoor use and the plants it may be used on. University of Minnesota Extension

- LIGHT COVERAGE: Fits 2x2, 2x3 & 2x4 ft tents; use a larger model for deeper penetration, even in small tents; about 4x4 ft coverage for supplemental lighting without a tent when hung 6 ft above the floor; coverage depends on height and plant needs
- CANOPY LIGHT PENETRATION: Helps light reach lower leaves; for light to moderate foliage or 1–5 bushy plants, based on mature size and spacing; choose a larger model for deeper penetration; very dense canopies may need extra side or in-canopy lighting
- FOR ALL GROWTH STAGES: Supports plants from germination and seedling development through vegetative growth, flowering and fruiting with a full spectrum of blue (460 nm), red (660 nm) and white (3000K–5000K) light
- AIRFLOW FOR HEALTHY GROWTH: Built-in fans move air through openings in the LED panel to keep air moving around the fixture; when airflow reaches the foliage, it helps refresh air around leaves and supports healthy plant growth
- VEG & BLOOM MODES: Use VEG for seedlings and early vegetative growth; add BLOOM as plants grow and need more light; keep both on during flowering and fruiting if higher output is needed; adjust hanging height to suit plant needs
Transition plants back outdoors in spring
For plants kept alive
Once frost risk has passed, acclimate live plants gradually rather than moving them straight from indoor conditions into full outdoor light. Iowa State recommends increasing exposure to brighter light over two to three weeks. Iowa State University Extension
For dormant storage organs
Depending on the plant and local conditions, plant stored bulbs and tubers outdoors after the last frost, or pot them indoors in late winter or early spring. Follow the plant’s specific growing guidance for timing and planting depth. Iowa State University Extension
