How to Install Crown Molding on an Outside Corner

Outside-corner crown molding uses two opposing miter cuts. Mark the molding’s position, test the angle with scraps, then glue and fasten the fitted pair.

Install crown molding on an outside corner by cutting two opposing miters, test-fitting them at the molding’s actual installed angle, then gluing the joint and fastening each piece to framing or suitable backing. A pair of 45-degree cuts is a starting point for a 90-degree corner—not a guarantee of a tight fit. Mark the molding’s position, keep its wall and ceiling edges oriented consistently on the saw, and use short scraps to check the angle before cutting finished lengths.

Tools and materials

  • Crown molding and a tape measure
  • Miter saw, or a hand saw and miter box
  • Pencil and a level or straightedge for layout marks
  • Finish nails and a hammer or nailer
  • Adhesive suitable for the molding and its finish
  • Short offcuts for test cuts; clamps can help hold a glued joint while it cures
  • Appropriate filler or caulk for small finishing gaps

Use eye and hearing protection as appropriate for your saw, and follow the tool and adhesive manufacturers’ instructions. A preassembled corner block is another option only when its profile and appearance suit the molding.

Mark where the crown will sit

Decide how far the molding will project from the wall and mark its lower edge around the corner. Keep the layout consistent on both walls; the marks make it easier to tell whether the two pieces meet at the intended height and projection. Locate studs and ceiling framing, or plan for suitable backing, so the molding can be secured rather than relying on drywall alone.

Orient the molding correctly on the saw

Crown molding is installed at an angle between the wall and ceiling, so its two edges must stay in a consistent orientation while you cut. For a nested cut, place the molding upside down against the saw table and fence, with the edge that meets the ceiling against the table and the edge that meets the wall against the fence. Keep that orientation for both opposing cuts; reversing or rolling the molding changes the cut.

The Home Depot’s guide covers saw orientation and manual cutting options at How to Cut Crown Molding; DuraKwik’s manufacturer instructions also show the wall and ceiling bedding edges at Crown Molding Installation Instructions.

Make and test an outside-corner mock-up

  1. Cut two short offcuts of the same molding profile, one with a miter angled each way. For a nominal 90-degree outside corner, begin with opposite 45-degree cuts.
  2. Bring the cut ends together at the actual corner. The cuts should form a mirrored pair that turns around the projecting outside point, not two cuts angled in the same direction.
  3. Hold each scrap against the wall and ceiling at the layout marks. Check the joint while the pieces are in their installed position, not just flat on the floor or bench.
  4. If the joint opens or the molding sits incorrectly, adjust the angle or setup and test again with scrap. Do not assume the room corner is exactly 90 degrees.

This Old House recommends using a pair of 12-inch scraps for a corner mock-up in its crown molding installation guide. Its dimensions are a practical example, not a requirement for every profile or saw.

Measure, cut, and fit the full-length pieces

Transfer the measurements

Once the mock-up closes correctly at the intended height and projection, measure each wall run from the corner and transfer the measurements to the molding. Make clear marks for the short and long points of each miter so you can confirm which end belongs at the outside corner before cutting.

Cut a mirrored pair

Cut one piece with the miter facing one way and the second with the opposite miter. For a standard square corner the cuts commonly start at 45 degrees, but use the angle established by your test fit if the walls are out of square. Keep the molding’s wall and ceiling edges oriented exactly as they were for the mock-up.

Dry-fit before fastening

Set both pieces on the layout marks and bring their mitered ends together. Check that the outside point closes and that both pieces sit flush at the intended projection. If they meet on the floor but not in place, recheck the crown’s orientation and installed position. Adjust or recut a piece as needed before applying adhesive or nails.

Rooms are not always square, and fitting to the actual corner matters more than relying on a nominal angle. The Home Depot guide discusses custom fitting; Fine Homebuilding’s cabinet-molding article, published July 6, 2022, also describes fitting molding in out-of-square conditions. That article concerns cabinet molding, so use it for the fitting principle rather than as a room-specific layout specification.

Glue the joint and fasten the crown

  1. With the pair dry-fitted and aligned, apply adhesive to the two mitered faces according to the adhesive instructions.
  2. Bring the faces together and hold the outside point and molding edges in alignment. A clamp can help keep a glued miter from shifting while the adhesive cures, if the shape and location allow it.
  3. Fasten each length into studs, ceiling framing, or suitable backing with finish nails. Avoid placing nails so close to an end that the molding splits; pre-drilling may help with wood trim near an end.
  4. Keep the joint aligned as you fasten. Follow the molding, fastener, adhesive, and tool manufacturers’ instructions for the materials and installation.

Fine Homebuilding’s cabinet-molding article describes dry-fitting, gluing both miter faces, and clamping the joint; This Old House and DuraKwik also describe adhesive and fastening practices for crown molding. The cabinet context is different, but the joint-holding technique can be useful where clamping is practical.

Finish small gaps and correct larger mismatches

After the adhesive has cured and the molding is secure, fill nail holes and address small surface gaps with filler or caulk appropriate to the molding material and finish. A substantially open miter is a fit problem, not a finishing gap: recut or replace the mismatched piece rather than trying to disguise the joint with filler.

Troubleshoot a crown joint that will not line up

  • The two miters point the same way: Outside-corner pieces need opposing cuts. Compare their short and long points and check the pair against scraps before cutting again.
  • The molding looks rolled or reversed: Return it to the same upside-down nested orientation for both cuts, with the wall edge and ceiling edge in their consistent positions.
  • The joint opens despite nominal 45-degree cuts: Check the actual corner with a scrap pair and tune the angle to the walls. A nominal 90-degree measurement may not match the built corner.
  • The pieces meet off the wall but not in place: Check that each length is held at the layout line and at the intended spring angle and projection before judging the joint.
  • The joint shifts while nailing: Dry-fit first, glue the miter faces, and keep the pieces aligned while fastening; clamp the joint if practical.
  • The molding splits near an end: Keep fasteners away from the very end where possible and pre-drill near-end holes in wood trim when appropriate.
