A useful check is to water when the top inch of soil feels dry, then water thoroughly and empty the saucer. The right interval varies with the pot, growing medium, light and room temperature.
How to tell when a Christmas cactus needs water
Check the soil before watering. University of Florida IFAS recommends watering when the top inch feels dry; University of New Hampshire Extension gives the broader cue of soil dry to the touch. These are practical checks, not a set number of days between waterings.
Holiday cacti are tropical rainforest epiphytes, not desert cacti, so prolonged complete dryness is not a good routine. In spring and summer, water regularly and do not let the compost dry out completely, advises the Royal Horticultural Society.
Adjust watering through the seasons
Spring and summer: support active growth
Check the soil and water when it reaches the dry-to-the-touch cue. How quickly it dries depends on the growing medium, container size, light and warmth, so check the plant rather than relying on a calendar.

#1 Best Overall
- Physical Characteristics: This plant is instantly recognizable for its flat, segmented stems that resemble small, green leaf-like pads joined end to end. In bloom, tubular flowers appear at the tips, often measuring two to three inches across and displaying vivid colors from crimson to pure white. When mature, the cascading stems can drape elegantly over container edges, creating a soft, trailing habit. This blend of unique foliage and brilliant flowers ensures year-round appeal.
- Sunlight Requirements: The Christmas Cactus flourishes in bright, indirect light that mimics its natural forest habitat. A spot near an east-facing or north-facing window provides the best balance of light without the stress of intense sun. Direct afternoon rays should be avoided, as too much exposure can cause the foliage to appear pale. Gentle morning sun, combined with ample indirect brightness, supports healthy growth and encourages more prolific blooming cycles.
- Watering Guidelines: This cactus prefers consistent moisture rather than extended dryness. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly until excess drains away. Overwatering should be avoided, but prolonged neglect is equally harmful. Maintaining even hydration, particularly during the active growth and blooming periods, helps the plant sustain lush foliage and support clusters of long-lasting flowers.
- Growth Rate and Maintenance: A moderately paced grower, the Christmas Cactus develops new stem segments throughout the year and may gradually extend into a full, arching display. Trimming or pinching back stems after the blooming season encourages branching and a fuller shape. With minimal shaping, the plant naturally cascades to form elegant, flowing lines. Its steady but not overwhelming growth rate makes it easy to maintain indoors while still providing noticeable seasonal progress.

Autumn: keep conditions cooler and drier
A cooler, drier spell in autumn supports flowering. The RHS cautions that too much warmth and water at this time can reduce or prevent blooms. This is a moderation—not a direction to leave the plant bone dry.
When buds appear: avoid sudden changes
Keep watering and the surrounding conditions steady once buds form. UF/IFAS notes that improper watering and environmental changes, including high temperatures, can contribute to bud drop.

After flowering: reduce watering during rest
Water less while the plant rests after flowering. The University of Minnesota Extension advises increasing watering again in spring or early summer as active growth resumes.

- Feel the growing medium; use the dry top inch as a practical cue.
- Water thoroughly so excess runs out through the bottom of the pot.
- Empty the saucer rather than leaving the pot standing in water.
Use a pot with drainage holes and a freely draining medium. Prolonged wet soil, especially in winter, can lead to root rot. University of New Hampshire Extension explains that the key is to water only when the soil mix is dry; see its Christmas cactus watering guidance. UF/IFAS also describes a freely draining medium and an open-drainage pot in its Christmas cactus care advice.
