Check hanging baskets every day in summer, then water when the compost feels dry. Baskets in full sun, wind or very hot weather may need watering daily—and sometimes twice in one day—but conditions matter more than a fixed schedule. Check the mix before watering so you avoid both a parched root ball and soggy compost.
How often do hanging baskets need water?
There is no reliable interval that suits every hanging basket. Basket size and material, plant growth, sunlight, wind and temperature all affect how quickly the compost dries. In summer, make a daily moisture check part of your routine.
Use the compost as your guide:
- Iowa State University Extension advises watering when the surface feels dry to the touch. On hot, sunny days, daily watering may be necessary: Iowa State University Extension.
- Purdue Extension suggests checking about 1/4 inch below the surface; water when it is dry. Baskets in direct sun generally need daily attention: Purdue Extension.
- The RHS recommends checking every day in summer and watering if the compost is not already moist: RHS.
These are practical checks from different sources, not a single exact depth that applies to every compost mix. Feel the mix rather than relying on the calendar alone.
What changes how quickly a basket dries?
Sun, heat and wind
Direct sun and exposed, windy positions can dry compost quickly. In hot, windy weather, a basket may need water twice a day, according to West Virginia University Extension. Treat that as a possibility, not a fixed rule: check the compost before each watering. Heat-stressed plants can wilt even when the mix is not dry, so wilting alone does not confirm that water is needed: WVU Extension.

Basket size and construction
A larger, deeper basket may hold more moisture, but a basket becomes heavier after watering; make sure its support is secure. Moss-lined baskets can lose moisture through their sides as well as through drainage. If one dries too quickly, a plastic liner with drainage holes may reduce side loss without trapping excess water. How to water without missing the root ball
- Check first. Feel the compost surface or a little below it. If it is still moist, wait and check again later rather than watering automatically.
- Water the compost slowly. Direct water onto the root zone, not just the foliage, and avoid a quick splash that wets only the surface. For ordinary hand watering, extension guidance commonly recommends continuing until water starts to drain from the bottom; this indicates the soil ball has been moistened. Illinois Extension likewise advises filling the top and allowing drainage: Illinois Extension.
- Check again in demanding conditions. During hot or windy weather, inspect the basket later in the day and water only if the mix has dried. Do not assume that every basket needs a second watering.
Runoff is a useful sign when hand watering, not a universal requirement for every watering method or a fixed volume to apply. In an RHS experiment, tested bedding plants performed well with smaller daily watering that did not make compost drip; the experiment is not a general recipe for all plants, baskets or climates: RHS watering-container research.

What if the compost has dried out completely?
Very dry potting mix can shrink away from the sides of the basket, allowing water poured over the top to run around the root ball instead of soaking it. If that happens, Iowa State University Extension advises soaking the basket in a tub for 1–2 hours, then removing it. Do not leave it submerged for more than two hours because prolonged soaking can increase the risk of root rot: Iowa State University Extension.

A long-reach watering wand with a gentle shower head can make elevated baskets easier to reach and direct water into the compost. Purdue notes that a basket wand can make hose handling easier; Iowa State recommends a 24–36 inch wand with a breaker for reaching plants efficiently. These are conveniences, not substitutes for checking moisture. There is no broadly applicable published volume of water for all hanging baskets. The RHS reported that its experiment used 160 ml per day to saturate the compost supporting each petunia and 80 ml per day to grow a good plant; those figures apply to that experiment, not to baskets generally. Use the compost’s moisture and your basket’s conditions to decide when to water.
