There is no single fertilizer schedule that applies to every Brussels sprouts bed. University of Minnesota Extension recommends side-dressing when plants are about 4 inches tall; a University of Illinois Extension crop guide recommends one nitrogen side-dressing at 12 inches. Another Illinois Extension article suggests feeding at planting, again at 12 inches, and then every three to four weeks. Use a soil test and local Extension advice to choose the schedule and amount for your garden.
Why fertilizer schedules differ
The recommendations come from different regional Extension guides, not a universal schedule. Minnesota Extension places the first side-dressing earlier, at about 4 inches tall. Illinois Extension’s Brussels sprouts page recommends a nitrogen side-dressing at 12 inches, while a separate Illinois article gives a more frequent general approach for Brussels sprouts: starter fertilizer at planting, another application at 12 inches, then repeat every three to four weeks.
Brussels sprouts are cole crops, and Illinois Extension notes that cole crops may benefit from one or two nitrogen side-dressings. The right timing depends on soil and crop stage, so do not combine the different schedules into a fixed rule for every garden.
Let a soil test guide the fertilizer
Before applying fertilizer, test the soil and follow the report’s recommendations for phosphorus and potassium. Minnesota Extension advises choosing a low- or no-phosphorus fertilizer unless the soil test specifically calls for phosphorus. These sources do not establish a universal home-garden dose or a particular N-P-K ratio; use the amount on the selected product label and your soil-test guidance.

- FEEDS UP TO 3 MONTHS: Miracle-Gro Shake 'N Feed Tomato, Fruit & Vegetable Plant Food is a plant fertilizer that feeds plants for up to 3 months, and nourishes above and below the soil
- FORMULATED WITH CALCIUM: This plant food for vegetables contains calcium to help form stronger cell walls, producing better quality and longer-lasting fruits and vegetables
- WHERE TO USE: For use with vegetable, fruit, and tomato plants, whether in-ground or indoor or outdoor container plants
- HOW TO APPLY: Apply this garden product evenly onto the soil and work into the top 1-3 inches of soil for in-ground plants, or lightly work into the soil of established container plants; water to start feeding
- COVERAGE: One 4.5 lb. container of Miracle-Gro Shake 'N Feed Tomato, Fruit & Vegetable Plant Food feeds up to 128 sq. ft.; reapply every 3 months and water regularly for a beautiful garden all season long
For a product choice, look for a low- or no-phosphorus vegetable fertilizer only when that fits the soil-test recommendation. Do not use a “Weed and Feed” product in a vegetable bed: its weed killer may damage or kill vegetable plants.
How to apply a side-dressing
- Apply the fertilizer beside the row of Brussels sprouts, rather than directly on the foliage or stems.
- Keep fertilizer from touching plant tissue, which can be burned by direct contact.
- Water after application to move the fertilizer into the soil.
Follow the fertilizer label for application directions, and consult your local Extension service if you need help translating a soil-test recommendation into a schedule.

Keep growth steady between feedings
Fertilizer is only one part of vigorous growth. Illinois Extension emphasizes maintaining adequate moisture, especially during summer. Water consistently according to conditions in your garden rather than relying on additional fertilizer to compensate for dry soil.
