Filling the ice bucket can take 24 hours or longer. These are different milestones: the first cubes appear before the bin is full, and cooling time and model-specific instructions affect the wait.
First cubes and a full bucket take different amounts of time
Samsung’s US buying guide says ice production typically begins 6–12 hours after installation. Samsung UK advises waiting at least 12 hours and says a bucket may take more than 24 hours to fill. Samsung Australia’s troubleshooting guidance allows 12–24 hours after installation. These regional estimates are guidance, not a guarantee for every model. Samsung UK describes typical production of 10–12 cubes every 45–60 minutes, depending on temperature, ambient conditions and the ice-maker type. This is an estimate from that support page, not a rate to expect from every refrigerator.
Why a new refrigerator may take longer
The refrigerator needs time to cool after installation. Samsung’s US delivery and installation guidance says a new refrigerator can take 24–48 hours to cool fully and gives about 24 hours for the first batch of ice. A partly filled bin during that period does not by itself indicate a fault. Samsung US delivery and installation guidance.

Startup timing varies with the model and installation conditions. If your refrigerator’s manual gives a different waiting period or first-use procedure, follow that model-specific guidance.
What to check if there is still no ice
- Check that the ice maker is on. The control-panel labels and steps vary by model; consult the manual if you cannot find the setting.
- Check the water supply. Make sure the water line is connected and the household water-supply valve is open. Samsung US ice-maker troubleshooting.
- Allow time for cooling. After installation, give the freezer time to reach operating temperature before judging production.
- Use only the model’s test or reset instructions. Samsung says test-button locations differ. Repeatedly pressing a test button can cause overflow or jamming, so check the manual before using it.
- Wait after troubleshooting. Samsung US says normal ice production may take up to 24 hours to return after troubleshooting.
If the refrigerator remains without ice beyond the startup period specified for its model and the water and power conditions are correct, consult Samsung support or service guidance for that model. Timing alone does not establish that a part has failed.

Discard the first ice
Samsung recommends discarding the first three batches—about 30 cubes—in its US buying guide. Other Samsung instructions call for discarding initial cubes or one or more buckets. Because the amount and procedure vary by model and market, follow the refrigerator’s manual rather than treating one discard rule as universal.
