Solar panels commonly produce useful electricity for 25 years or longer, but there is no fixed expiration date. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes residential panels as usually lasting 20–25 years, while a 2025 industry survey summarized by DOE estimates an average operational lifespan of 25–35 years. Those are different population-level estimates, not guarantees for a particular roof or system. Panels typically lose output gradually, and damage, installation, site conditions and other equipment affect how long the system remains useful.

What does a solar panel’s lifespan mean?

A solar system does not usually stop working on a preset date. “Lifespan” can refer to how long modules physically operate, how long they deliver useful electricity, or the period covered by a performance warranty. Those measures are related, but they are not interchangeable.

DOE’s consumer guide says residential panels usually last 20–25 years. A separate DOE summary of a 2025 Berkeley Lab survey of U.S. solar industry professionals puts average operational lifespan at 25–35 years. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) describes 20–30 years as a typical performance period for a photovoltaic system. The estimates reflect different sources and contexts; none means that every panel will fail at the lower number or last to the upper one. DOE solar energy technologies; DOE summary of the 2025 industry survey; DOE FEMP lifecycle guidance.

For a specific installation, age alone cannot establish remaining service life. The panel model, site conditions, system history, measured production and warranty terms all matter.

How quickly do solar panels lose output?

Output generally declines over time rather than dropping suddenly. Published estimates differ because some describe module performance and others measure whole-system performance across operating installations.

Estimate What it measures How to interpret it
Less than 1% performance loss per year is common Modules, according to NREL’s Photovoltaic Lifetime Project A broad module-level estimate, not a prediction for every product or roof. NREL Photovoltaic Lifetime Project.
About 0.75% median loss per year System performance in DOE’s summary of an analysis of nearly 19,000 inverters A fleet-level median; actual systems vary. DOE PV Fleet summary.
About 0.5% per year Performance figure cited in DOE FEMP guidance A general planning estimate, not a guarantee for a particular installation. DOE FEMP lifecycle guidance.

These figures should not be treated as competing specifications or combined into a single guaranteed rate: they use different evidence and definitions. DOE also says most systems maintain at least 80% of their initial output for at least 25 years. That is a general description, not a promise that applies to every make, model or warranty. DOE fact sheet, June 25, 2024.

Why might a system stop producing sooner?

Gradual degradation is only one influence. Damage or a problem elsewhere in the system can reduce production even when the panels themselves remain serviceable.

  • Severe weather or fire: DOE identifies these as events that can end system performance. DOE FEMP lifecycle guidance.
  • Physical impact or mechanical stress: Hail and forces such as walking on modules can crack them, according to NREL. NREL Photovoltaic Lifetime Project.
  • Site and system conditions: Climate and other system factors affect degradation. Shading, soiling, weather, outages and inverter faults can also influence measured whole-system output, so low production does not by itself prove panel failure. DOE PV Fleet summary.

A 2024 NREL report summary describes analysis covering 25,000 inverters across almost 2,500 sites in 37 states and territories, illustrating the scale and geographic spread of fleet-level performance evidence. It does not provide an individual system’s remaining-life prediction. NREL 2024 report summary.

Does a 25-year warranty mean panels last only 25 years?

No. A warranty is a contract about specified coverage, not an expiration date. NREL distinguishes a product warranty, which covers materials or workmanship, from a performance warranty, which addresses output. Warranty terms vary, so check the documents for the installed modules and other equipment rather than assuming a standard applies. NREL report on photovoltaic warranty terms.

DOE’s general statement that most systems maintain at least 80% of initial output for at least 25 years does not replace the warranty for a specific product. To assess coverage, locate the module and inverter make and model, installation date, warranty documents and production history. DOE recommends collecting system age, equipment details and production history when evaluating a system. DOE consumer guide.

How can you tell whether panels need repair or replacement?

Look for a sustained, unexplained change in production or visible damage, then investigate before replacing hardware. DOE recommends comparing actual output with expected output to quantify underperformance and help identify its cause. A utility bill or a single low-production day is not enough to diagnose a panel, because weather and other system components affect output. DOE PV Fleet summary.

  1. Collect the system record. Find the installation date, module and inverter models, warranties, and monitoring or production history. DOE consumer guide.
  2. Compare like periods. Review production over multiple years and compare it with a reasonable expectation for the same site, design and period. Account for weather and changes such as new shading; do not infer panel failure from an unadjusted bill or one unusual day.
  3. Check for visible damage and operating issues. Note cracks or other apparent damage, outages, shading, soiling and possible inverter faults. Do not walk on modules.
  4. Review coverage before authorizing replacement. Compare the observed problem with the product and performance warranty terms, and ask a qualified solar professional to assess sustained underperformance or visible damage.
  5. Compare the options. Consider expected production and cost for repair or repowering against continued operation, along with roof work and any code or interconnection constraints. DOE says keeping a rooftop system operating as long as possible is usually beneficial, but the economics depend on the installation. DOE FEMP lifecycle guidance.

What happens when panels reach the end of service?

When equipment is retired, consider whether it can be reused or recycled and check local requirements. The condition of the components, local rules and costs affect the appropriate route; DOE recommends planning for reuse and recycling as a system approaches the end of its performance period. DOE end-of-performance-period guidance.
