How Figs Are Grown: Planting, Care, and Harvesting

Choose a fig suited to your region, give it sun and well-drained soil, and harvest when the fruit softens and bends downward.

Grow figs successfully by choosing a locally suited cultivar, planting it in a sunny, well-drained spot, and protecting it from the climate and pests in your area. Harvest when the fruit softens and bends downward—not just when the calendar says it should be ready. Pollination, pruning, and winter care vary by fig type and region, so local growing advice matters.

Choose a fig suited to your location

The edible fig is Ficus carica, but fig types differ in their pollination needs. Common figs are often a practical choice for home gardens: the University of Maryland Extension says common varieties grown in Maryland can set fruit without pollination or fertilization, and UF/IFAS recommends common figs for Florida because they do not require pollination. Some other fig types depend on a specific fig wasp, which is not found in Florida. These regional recommendations are not a guarantee that every cultivar will thrive everywhere.

Before buying a fig tree, check local extension guidance or a reputable nursery for a cultivar suited to your winters, growing season, and pollination conditions. Consider whether you have room for a bush-shaped tree in the ground or need to grow one in a container, and whether local humidity and rainfall could increase fruit splitting or spoilage. There is no single best cultivar for every location.

Pick a sunny, well-drained planting site

Figs need strong sunlight and soil that does not remain soggy. Maryland Extension recommends at least eight hours of direct summer sun in its regional guidance; use local advice rather than treating that number as a universal threshold. UC IPM advises avoiding places where water collects, since persistently wet conditions can contribute to rots.

Planting timing depends on your region and the type of stock. Bare-root trees are generally planted in an appropriate dormant-season window, while container-grown plants may be planted over a wider period if you can water them as they establish. Follow local planting guidance rather than applying a calendar date from another climate.

Propagate figs from cuttings or other growth

Dormant hardwood cuttings are one way to propagate figs. In its Florida guidance, UF/IFAS describes using dormant wood about 6 inches long and less than 1 inch in diameter, with the basal end taken from 2-year-old wood. Place the cutting in a porous medium kept moist, not waterlogged, and care for it as roots and shoots develop. These measurements are an example method from that publication, not a universal requirement for every propagation setup.

Root suckers and layering a low branch are additional home propagation options. Whichever approach you use, avoid leaving the rooting medium saturated.

Water and prune according to the tree and region

Water newly planted trees while they establish and irrigate during prolonged dry spells, especially as fruit develops. Keep the soil from becoming waterlogged. Figs commonly grow as multi-stemmed bushes and produce basal suckers; a bush form is normal and does not by itself mean the tree needs corrective pruning.

Pruning is not required for a fig tree to produce fruit, according to UF/IFAS. If you choose to prune, consider your region and crop pattern: UF/IFAS advises pruning in its Florida context after harvest in late summer, while UC IPM notes that mature trees set fruit on current-season growth, making dormant pruning for fruit wood less important than it is for some other fruit crops. Remove dead or damaged wood when appropriate, and consult local guidance before making heavy cuts, particularly if winter injury may have affected the tree.

Plan for cold, rain, and pest pressure

Cold may damage or kill aboveground wood, especially in colder regions. Maryland Extension says sustained winter temperatures below 20°F may injure or kill aboveground wood in Maryland; that is a regional warning, not a universal hardiness threshold. Check local recommendations for winter protection and for cultivars that can tolerate your conditions.

Humidity and heavy rain can also affect the crop. UF/IFAS notes that Florida’s humid growing season brings more insect and disease pressure and that rain can split fruit. UC IPM also cautions that humid conditions and late-season rain can contribute to spoilage or splitting. Because pests and diseases vary by location, identify the problem and follow local extension advice rather than applying a pesticide based on a general list.

Harvest by signs of ripeness

Fig harvest timing varies by cultivar and location, so use the fruit’s condition rather than a fixed date. Penn State Extension identifies these signs of readiness:

  • The fruit changes color.
  • It softens.
  • Its stem bends downward.
  • The ostiole—the small opening at the bottom of the fruit—opens.

Figs are perishable, so pick ripe fruit and use it promptly. UF/IFAS describes Florida’s ripening season as varying with cultivar and location; its timing should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.
