How Does an Electrical Transformer Work?

An electrical transformer uses changing magnetic flux to transfer energy between windings and change AC voltage according to their turns ratio.

An electrical transformer transfers energy between two windings through a changing magnetic field. Alternating current in the primary winding creates changing magnetic flux in a core; that flux induces an alternating voltage in the secondary winding. The number of turns in each winding determines how the voltage changes.

How does an electrical transformer work?

  1. AC enters the primary winding. The primary is connected to the alternating-current source. As the current repeatedly changes direction, it produces a changing magnetic field.
  2. The core carries magnetic flux. A magnetic core provides a path for the changing flux to link the primary and secondary windings. Insulation separates the windings from each other and from the core.
  3. The changing flux induces voltage. The changing magnetic flux induces an electromotive force in both windings. The induced voltage in the secondary can supply a connected load.

The windings do not need a direct electrical connection to transfer energy. The magnetic field is the coupling mechanism; electrons do not travel from the primary wire into the secondary wire. The U.S. Department of Energy describes the principle as energy transfer between coils by means of varying magnetic flux in its Electrical Science handbook.

How do transformer turns change voltage?

For an ideal transformer, the voltage ratio equals the winding turns ratio:

Vp / Vs = Np / Ns

Here, Vp and Vs are the primary and secondary voltages, and Np and Ns are the numbers of turns in those windings. If the secondary has twice as many turns as the primary, its ideal voltage is twice the primary voltage. If it has fewer turns, the secondary voltage is lower.

  • Step-up transformer: The secondary has more turns than the primary, so secondary voltage is higher.
  • Step-down transformer: The secondary has fewer turns, so secondary voltage is lower.

In the ideal case, current changes in the opposite direction to voltage: stepping voltage up reduces current for a given transferred power, while stepping voltage down increases it. Real transformers have losses, so output power is less than input power. Efficiency is output power divided by input power; there is no single percentage that applies to every transformer, because performance depends on its design and operating conditions.

Why are transformers used in the power grid?

At a generating station, a step-up transformer raises voltage for long-distance transmission. For a given amount of power, higher voltage requires less current, which reduces transmission losses. Transformers then lower voltage at stages in the distribution system before electricity reaches homes and businesses. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains that higher-voltage electricity is more efficient and less costly to transmit over long distances in its overview of circuits and transformers.

  • 【Note】Size: 8×6×6 (in), Weight 10 (lb). The transformer only converts the voltage, does not change the frequency hz, please make sure your appliance is compatible with 50/60hz before use. hair dryers and coffee makers are recommended to choose a transformer with more than 2 times power.
  • 【Sockets】: 4 AC outputs, 2 US Standard Socket for 110-120V appliance(s) & 2 Universal Sockets accept all types of plugs except the Big South African plug for 220-240V appliance(s).The transformer can be used in countries which voltage are 110V~120V or 220V~240V such as US, EUR, UK, CN,AU and more.
  • 【Input voltage Selector (IMPORTANT!)】Be sure to switch to the correct input voltage before plugging(110V in US/CA/MX).

The voltage supplied to a building is not universal: it varies by country and service configuration. A transformer’s role is to adjust voltage, not to guarantee one standard output everywhere.

Can a transformer change DC voltage?

Not through ordinary transformer action. A transformer needs changing magnetic flux to induce voltage in its secondary, and steady direct current does not continually change direction. Electronic DC converters can change DC voltage, but they are a different type of device. OpenStax explains this distinction in College Physics 2e, section 23.7.

What matters when choosing a transformer?

For a low-voltage application, first identify the required input voltage, output voltage, and whether the output must be AC or DC. Then confirm the load’s current or VA requirement and the AC frequency where applicable. A turns ratio alone does not establish that a transformer is suitable or safe for a particular installation.
