How Far Apart Should You Plant Zucchini?

For most home gardens, space individual zucchini 2–3 feet apart and rows about 3–5 feet apart. Hill planting and regional guidance call for different layouts.

For most home gardens, plant individual zucchini 2–3 feet apart, with about 3–5 feet between rows. If planting in hills, place two to three plants in each hill, spacing hills 3–4 feet apart within the row and 4–6 feet between rows. Adjust for the variety’s growth habit and follow its seed packet when it gives more specific directions.

How far apart should I plant individual zucchini?

Use 2–3 feet between plants as a practical starting point, then leave about 3–5 feet between rows so you can reach and tend the plants. These are general home-garden recommendations from University of Maryland Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension; they are not a single spacing rule for every cultivar or region.

How far apart should zucchini hills be?

Hill planting groups plants at each planting location, so plan the number of plants and the distance between hills together. Maryland Extension and Virginia Cooperative Extension recommend two to three plants per hill, with hills 3–4 feet apart in the row and 4–6 feet between rows.

How variety and region change the spacing

Zucchini and other summer squash may grow as compact bushes or spread with longer vines. Compact bush varieties can suit smaller gardens; spreading types need more room for their foliage and vines. Check the seed packet for the selected cultivar’s spacing, since local and variety-specific advice is more useful than a universal number.

  • Short-vined bush types: University of Minnesota Extension allows 2–3 feet between rows or hills for these types. This is regional guidance, not a guarantee that every bush cultivar will fit at that distance.
  • Spreading or vining types: Minnesota Extension advises hills about 5–6 feet apart and 2–3 feet of space on either side of the row for vines.
  • Western Oregon: Oregon State University Extension recommends 18–36 inches between plants and 36–40 inches between rows.
  • Florida: UF/IFAS recommends 12–24 inches between plants and 36 inches between rows.

The differences reflect region, planting arrangement, and growth habit. The recommendations are gardening guidance, not measured yield or disease outcomes. Consult local extension advice if available for your area.

Can you plant zucchini closer together on a trellis?

Do not assume trellising automatically allows close spacing. The extension recommendations cited here do not establish one reduced spacing that works for trellised zucchini across cultivars. Use the variety’s packet directions and account for its mature spread when planning the planting area.

Plan the planting area

  1. Identify whether the variety is described as compact or bush, or as spreading or vining.
  2. For individual plants, mark positions 2–3 feet apart and allow about 3–5 feet between rows as a general home-garden layout.
  3. For hills, mark each hill 3–4 feet apart within the row and 4–6 feet between rows, then plant two to three plants per hill.
  4. Compare the layout with the seed packet and adjust to its cultivar-specific directions and your access needs.
