How Far Apart Should You Plant Cucumber Plants?

Start with 12–18 inches between individual cucumber plants, then adjust for vining or bush habit, hills, and whether plants grow on a trellis.

For most cucumber gardens, start with 12–18 inches between individual plants. Give ground-sprawling vines more room between rows—typically 4–6 feet—or train them up a trellis to use less ground space. Bush varieties are more compact and can often be spaced about 2–3 feet apart. The right distance depends on the variety and layout, so follow the seed packet when it gives specific directions.

Spacing recommendations at a glance

These are U.S. extension recommendations, not universal biological thresholds or results of a spacing trial. Check whether a guide measures individual plants, hills, or rows before applying its numbers.

How to choose the right spacing

For a ground-sprawling row

Use roughly 12–18 inches between individual plants as a starting point, then provide enough room for the vines to spread and for you to reach the bed. Extension guidance commonly places rows 4–6 feet apart. The University of Minnesota also describes allowing 2–3 feet of vine-spread space on either side of a ground-grown row.

For a trellis

Growing vertically reduces the ground area vines need and can make harvesting easier. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach notes that “Cucumbers can be successfully grown on trellis systems to save space and make harvest easier.” Trellising does not mean plants can be crowded without limit: the extension recommendations above generally thin trellised plants to about 8–12 inches apart, with Virginia Tech specifying 9–12 inches.

For bush or compact varieties

Bush cucumbers take up less room than many vining types, so they can suit a smaller garden. Recommendations vary by source and whether spacing refers to hills or rows; a practical range is about 2–3 feet between hills or rows. Check your variety’s packet for its own layout guidance.

Plant spacing, row spacing, and hills are different measurements

Plant spacing is the distance between individual cucumber plants in a row. Row spacing is the distance between neighboring rows, which needs to account for vine growth and access. A hill is a planting spot containing a cluster—often two or three plants—not one plant. For example, a recommendation to place hills several feet apart does not mean each plant in a hill should be that far from its neighbor.

Adjusting spacing for a small garden

In a narrow bed or raised garden, consider a trellised vining cucumber or a compact bush cultivar. A trellis shifts vine growth upward and can make closer rows workable; a bush variety needs less sprawling space. These are space-saving layout choices, not evidence that close spacing will produce the same yield as a roomier planting. The cited extension guidance does not establish a yield comparison across spacings.
