Amanda Niederhauser’s Christmas home tour blends traditional red and green, woodland details, bright retro color, and cat-themed decorations. Quilts are part of the rooms rather than just seasonal displays: they cover a loveseat, mark an upstairs landing, and bring holiday color to the bedroom. The tour was published by AllPeopleQuilt on December 4, 2024, so it records the home as shown then.
How Amanda Niederhauser decorates for Christmas
Niederhauser uses the holidays to explore styles beyond her home’s usual farmhouse look. The tour moves between classic red and green, woodland and wintry motifs, a vivid pink, aqua, and mint palette, and decorations inspired by her cats. Rather than settling on one theme, she brings together the things she loves.
“You get a little more creative liberty during the holidays. You get to break free of any decorating restraints that you have. I love all the Christmas styles and have a tree for all my passions.”
The trees mix vintage, handmade, and store-bought ornaments. That combination gives the rooms a collected, personal feel instead of making every decoration match.

Why quilting is central to the display
Niederhauser learned to sew from her mother when she was 12 and taught herself to quilt later. The tour says she makes at least one new Christmas quilt each year and may start sewing as early as July. Handmade decorations are therefore not simply a finishing touch: they grow out of a practice she returns to throughout the year.
The tour’s Woodland Christmas quilt is from her 2023 book, More Playful Precut Quilts. AllPeopleQuilt describes the book as containing 15 projects built around mix-and-match 12-inch blocks. Niederhauser favors approachable patterns, saying, “I gravitate toward patterns that are easy. I’m not going to spend a week putting it together. If I can’t do it in a day and a half, I’m out.”

Her sewing room reflects that practical approach. The feature describes a functional space with a large cutting table, fabric storage, and a sitting area—not a room staged for perfect order. She says, “I always try to show that we all are quilting because we love it, because it brings joy, because we want to make things for other people, and not because we’re trying to be perfect.”

The home tour also connects Niederhauser’s quilting to her work as a fabric designer. AllPeopleQuilt says she began designing for Riley Blake Designs in 2020. Her first five collections featured felines, and a later Cretaceous collection featured dinosaurs. The article documents that design history, but does not establish which collections are currently available.

Her approach to decorating is personal rather than showroom-driven: “I want it to feel like you’re walking into my life. I don’t need my house to look like a picture in a magazine. I want it to reflect what I love and the things I’ve done. It’s very quilty!” The tour’s mix of heirlooms, handmade pieces, and bought ornaments makes that idea visible throughout the house.
