Put a houseplant where its light needs match the light available at the plant—not simply where the room looks bright. Window direction is a starting point; distance, shading, season, temperature, airflow and humidity determine whether a particular position will work.
Start with the plant’s light needs
Before choosing a spot, check the plant’s requirements for light, temperature and humidity. Light is the first placement decision: a plant may tolerate only a limited range, and it is often difficult to change the light a room provides. UConn Extension’s houseplant guidance recommends researching a plant’s growing needs before bringing it home; UF/IFAS likewise advises treating light as a primary consideration.
Use window direction and distance as a rough map, not a guarantee. UConn Extension suggests these starting positions:
- Low light: somewhat back from a north-facing window.
- Medium light: near a north-facing window or a few feet back from an east- or west-facing window.
- High light: in front of an east- or west-facing window, or up to five feet from a south-facing window.
- Direct light: close to a southern exposure.
Conditions at the actual spot can differ substantially from these rules. Window size and direction, latitude, season, curtains, screens, awnings, trees and nearby buildings all affect incoming light. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension describes east-facing windows as typically offering gentle morning sun, while south- and west-facing windows tend to provide brighter, more intense light indoors. Most houseplants do well near a window in bright indirect light, but low-light-tolerant plants still need enough ambient light to grow well.

What “bright, indirect light” means in practice
“Bright, indirect light” is a broad description, not a precise measurement. People’s eyes adjust to different brightness levels, so comparing rooms by sight can be misleading. UF/IFAS offers approximate midday foot-candle ranges as a guide: 25–100 foot-candles for low light, 100–500 for medium, 500–1,000 for high, and more than 1,000 for direct sunlight. These are general reference bands, not a guarantee for a particular species or spot.
Measure or compare light where the plant will sit, rather than at the window or across the room. A light meter is a better measurement tool than a phone app; app readings can indicate relative changes, but their accuracy varies. The direction a window faces, the weather and landscape outside, and the time of year all affect how much light reaches a houseplant, as UF/IFAS explains.

Compare candidate positions in the room
If a plant could go in more than one place, compare the conditions at each position. Note how far it is from a window, when direct sunlight reaches it, and what blocks or filters the light. Then consider the room’s temperature, airflow and humidity as well as light duration.
- Light: Is the spot bright enough for the plant, and for how many hours? Does it receive direct sun?
- Direction and season: Does it get gentle morning light or stronger exposure later in the day? How might the pattern change across the year?
- Obstructions and glass: Do curtains, screens, trees, awnings or buildings shade it?
- Temperature and airflow: Is the spot near a vent, door, radiator, fireplace or cold pane?
- Humidity: Does the room suit the plant without compromising its light needs?
Avoid drafts, vents and cold glass
Keep plants away from heating registers, air-conditioning units, fireplaces, radiators, frequently opened drafty doors and poorly insulated windows. Avoid letting foliage touch cold window glass. A sunny window may provide useful light while also creating temperature extremes; moving the pot back or filtering the sun with a curtain or shade can help. UConn Extension advises keeping foliage off cold glass, while University of Maryland Extension warns against drafts and heat or air-conditioning sources.

For general foliage houseplant guidance, Maryland Extension gives 70–80°F during the day and 60–68°F at night as ranges for best growth. These are reference ranges for foliage indoor plants, not universal requirements for every species.
Balance humidity with adequate light
For most houseplants—excluding cacti, succulents and a few others—UNH Extension’s January 2025 guidance gives a preferred relative humidity range of 40–60%. Tropical species may thrive at 70–80%. A bathroom or kitchen can offer higher humidity, but it is a suitable location only if it also provides the light the plant needs.

If the room is too dry for a humidity-loving plant, UNH Extension recommends a portable humidifier near the plants for more consistent control; in a larger room, it may need to run for multiple hours each day. A digital thermometer and hygrometer can help track conditions. Grouping plants can create a more humid local microclimate, while pebble trays may offer a small benefit; keep the pot above the water rather than sitting in it. Avoid placing plants near heat vents, radiators, outside doors, or drafty and poorly insulated windows.

Light at a window shifts with the season, day length, weather and outdoor shade. A south-facing window may receive more direct winter sun because the sun sits lower, even as shorter days or other conditions reduce the total light available. Check the plant’s position again when the season changes or its growth changes.

Leggy growth, smaller leaves or less vivid color can indicate inadequate light; scorch can indicate excessive direct sun. Those symptoms can have other causes, so use them as reasons to reassess rather than as a diagnosis by themselves. The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension’s indoor plant guidance also emphasizes accounting for the conditions plants face indoors.
When natural light is not enough
If no window position supplies the light a plant needs, choose a species adapted to the available conditions or add suitable grow lighting. UF/IFAS says plants can grow entirely under artificial light when the source is appropriate, and identifies fluorescent and LED lights as common options. The required light duration varies by plant, so follow guidance for the species and lighting setup rather than assuming one schedule suits every plant.
