A wood chipper feeds branches toward rotating knives, which cut the wood into smaller pieces before the chips leave through a discharge chute. In a typical self-feeding mobile machine, powered feed rollers pull material from the hopper into a cutting assembly inside an enclosed housing. The exact feed path, controls and safe operating steps vary by machine, so the manufacturer’s manual is essential.
How a wood chipper turns a branch into chips
- Load the infeed hopper. The operator places a branch into the hopper, which guides it toward the feed mechanism.
- Feed the branch toward the knives. Powered rollers or another feed mechanism grip and advance the material. Once grabbed, the branch moves toward the cutting assembly without the operator pushing it by hand.
- Cut the wood. Knives fixed to a rotating disc or drum slice the advancing branch into smaller pieces. OSHA and NIOSH describe knives on the mobile chippers covered by their safety materials as generally rotating at 1,000 to 2,000 revolutions per minute. That is a reported range for those machines, not a universal chipper specification.
- Discharge the chips. The housing directs the cut material through a discharge chute, where it exits the machine.
The main components are the power plant, feed mechanism, rotating cutting assembly, enclosed housing and discharge chute. Their design and operating details differ across machines.
What is the difference between drum and disc wood chippers?
Both types use rotating knives to cut wood, but the knives are mounted on different cutting assemblies. A disc chipper cuts with knives attached to a rotating disc; a drum chipper uses knives attached to a rotating drum. That distinction alone does not establish which machine is better or how much it can process.

The California Energy Commission identifies knife condition and geometry, clearance, knife count, feed rate and cutting-assembly speed as chip-size variables. These factors do not guarantee a particular output size across machines. Dirty or heavily contaminated feedstock can quickly dull or damage knives.

Why wood chippers are hazardous
Powered feed can pull a person into the machine, while rotating knives and ejected material create additional serious hazards. OSHA reported that 39 employees were killed in chipper accidents from 1996 through 2005; 78 percent of those fatalities involved being caught in the chipper. These figures are historical data for that period, not a current risk rate.
OSHA and NIOSH safety materials emphasize guards, functioning emergency controls, operator training and appropriate protective equipment. NIOSH also recommends inspecting the machine and its safety devices, following the manufacturer’s recommendations, keeping hands and feet out of the hopper, and walking away after the feed mechanism grabs material. OSHA says access covers or doors must not be opened until the disc or drum has completely stopped.

This explanation is not a safe-use procedure. Feeding, startup, shutdown, jam clearing and maintenance must follow the instructions for the exact chipper. Machines differ, and a general description cannot substitute for their controls or manual.
