The Make: feature titled “Homemade Valveless Pulsejet Motor” documents a historical hobby project associated with builder Larry Cottrill. It describes a pulsejet—an engine that produces power through intermittent combustion—and identifies this design as valveless. The available material supports a high-level account, not a verified construction or operating guide.

What the Make: feature reports

The feature appears in an indexed Make: Volume 2 PDF, with the search result identifying the issue as Make: 19. Because the available copy is hosted by a secondary archive, the issue and edition details should be treated as reported by that copy rather than independently confirmed against an authoritative Make: version: Make: magazine, Volume 2 PDF.

The feature associates the project with Larry Cottrill and says the design was successfully constructed in 2004 by Cottrill and hobbyists in Connecticut and Pennsylvania. That is the feature’s historical account; the available material does not independently verify those builds.

Cottrill is quoted describing the sound: “There’s really nothing like a pulsejet. It roars much louder than a diesel train whistle; it’s unbelievable.” This is a reported personal comparison, not a measured sound-level result.

The valve plates have a limited lifespan (approx. 1-5 minutes of total runtime).
  • 🔬 A High-Impact Educational & Display Piece – An awe-inspiring model for understanding jet propulsion. It serves as a profound scientific educational tool and a striking desktop display for serious tech enthusiasts. Ideal for inspiring advanced projects, but recommended only for those with significant mechanical experience and understanding of safety protocols.

What “valveless pulsejet” means

A pulsejet is an intermittent-combustion engine: combustion occurs in pulses rather than as a steady process. The featured design is identified as valveless, meaning its concept lacks inlet valves. That distinction describes the design category; it does not establish how this particular motor performs relative to other engines or pulsejet designs.

Noise is a central concern

Noise is more than a colorful detail in the feature. A 1952 NACA report on intermittent and steady-flow jet engines describes intense pulsejet noise and says the tested pulsejet produced a discrete-frequency spectrum, with a predominant component corresponding to its firing frequency. It also reports the largest sound pressures to the rear of that tested engine and near its axis. These are findings about the engine examined in that report, not measurements or specifications for the Make: project: NACA Technical Note 2756.

  • The pulse jet engine is a type of jet engine known for its simple structure and higher efficiency compared to conventional engines. Initially used in missiles, it can be applied to various aerospace models and vehicle models.
  • Made of carbon steel and aluminum alloy for enhanced durability and lighter weight. The hollowed internal channels adopt stainless steel covers, resulting in a weight reduction of 4 grams. High-temperature resistant 304 stainless steel pipes reduce weight by 15 grams.
  • Featuring high-temperature resistant 304 valve plates for extended lifespan by an additional minute. Designed with a black high-temperature resistant coating for an attractive look. The enlarged injection chamber provides a thrust of around 500 grams, aiming to offer enthusiasts a lightweight, high-thrust pulse jet engine.
  • Wide Applications: An amazing model suitable for tech enthusiasts, family, friends, and childrens holiday presents. It serves as both a scientific educational toy for understanding aircraft engine principles and an inspiring tool for kids science projects, nurturing curiosity and creativity. Perfect to be a cool desktop art piece as well.
  • Notes: Loud noise at 130 dB. Recommended for outdoor use only. Avoid igniting high-pressure outside the engine, because it could catch fire. Expertise in model modification is necessary for installation. The valve plate lifespan for this engine is appr 1-5 minutes. Exercise caution for individuals with limited manual dexterity.

A NASA/NACA-indexed 1988 paper specifically addresses noise-producing characteristics of highly loaded valveless pulse combustors, including noise generation and prediction: The Noise-Producing Characteristics of Highly Loaded, Valveless, Pulse Combustors. Together, these sources support taking noise seriously, but they do not establish a safe distance, exposure limit, or suitable hearing-protection rating for this homemade motor.

What the available evidence does not establish

  • No project-specific measured noise level, thrust, efficiency, cost, or reliability figure is established.
  • The feature’s account of Cottrill wearing plastic earmuffs over foam ear plugs is an anecdote, not a tested protective-equipment recommendation or assurance of protection.
  • No complete, verified construction process, fuel-handling protocol, ignition method, operating limits, or safe test procedure is available in the cited material.

For those reasons, this historical feature should not be treated as instructions for building or running a pulsejet. The sources support describing the engine and the project’s reported history, not recommending a construction or test setup.
