Faversham House, a heritage-listed residence at 24 Grey Street in York, was reported for sale in July 2025 for $2.5 million. That was the reported asking price at the time, not confirmation that the property remains on the market. Its significance goes well beyond its scale: the Heritage Council of Western Australia records a history tied to convict-era construction, Victorian Rustic Gothic architecture and three generations of the Monger family.

Was Faversham House for sale, and what was the reported price?

PerthNow reported on 19 July 2025 that Faversham House had been listed for $2.5 million, with permission to continue operating as accommodation. The report described it as a private residence and said the family had bought it in 2022 to run as a bed and breakfast. Owner Eden Munro told the paper the family had lovingly restored the property.

The report followed a change in the family’s plans after a death in the family. It is a snapshot of the listing in July 2025, not evidence of the property’s present sale status, price, ownership or use. The available sources do not establish whether it has since sold or whether accommodation operations continue. PerthNow’s 19 July 2025 report is the source for the listing details.

What did the 2025 report say about the house?

PerthNow described a substantial property on a 1.72-hectare block. Its reported figures and features were:

  • 15 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms.
  • 1,302 square metres of indoor and verandah space.
  • A drawing room, formal dining hall, ballroom, billiard room, wine cellar and library.
  • Some antique furniture and period fittings, including marble fireplaces, reportedly included in the asking price.

These are figures and inclusions from the 2025 sale report; they should not be treated as independently verified current specifications or as confirmation of what a buyer would receive today.

How old is Faversham House?

The Heritage Council of Western Australia’s official inHerit record gives a more carefully staged chronology than a single construction date. It records the original land grant to John Henry Monger Senior in 1841, excavation and cellar work beginning around 1849, and construction of the house from about 1850. Successive Monger family members expanded it later.

PerthNow’s 2025 report described the house as beginning construction in 1836, but that date is not supported by the official chronology cited here. The Heritage Council record is the stronger basis for dating the documented grant, site work and construction. It does not support saying that the entire present building was completed in 1836.

Why is Faversham House important to WA heritage?

The Heritage Council record identifies the house’s connection to the convict period in Western Australian history and says convict labour was used in most stages of construction. The building’s development is recorded across several phases, including 1849, around 1850, around 1858 and 1867. It is a two-storey stone residence with timber floors and a corrugated iron roof, described in the record as Victorian Rustic Gothic.

The place is associated with three generations of the Monger family and is recognised for historical, architectural and social significance, as well as its landmark presence in York. Its heritage importance is therefore not just a matter of age or size: the record connects the house’s construction, family history and civic presence to the development of the town.

What has Faversham House been used for?

After its period as a Monger family residence, the house was used as a hospital and convalescent home. Following restoration, the official record notes accommodation and function use. PerthNow’s 2025 report said the property could continue operating as accommodation, but that listing-era detail does not establish its current use.
