HotTwist is a heat exchanger used as part of a water-source heat-pump system. A separate Scottish housing trial reported heating a 140-m² uninsulated building, but the available account does not establish typical home savings or independently verified seasonal performance.
What the 75% figure actually refers to
New Atlas reported on June 7, 2024, that SeaWarm expected up to a 75% reduction in heating bills for one museum organization. That is a forecast for a specific case study—not a measured result across homes, a typical household estimate, or a guaranteed saving. The report does not provide a measured bill comparison for typical homes.
The report described demonstrations involving a museum, a greenhouse, and housing in a former naval barracks. Its detailed housing example was an uninsulated 140-m² building heated to 25°C using a 13-kW heat pump and 12 radiators. These are reported trial details, not proof that another building would achieve the same indoor temperature, energy use, or cost.
New Atlas also reported that the Scottish trial produced four times as much heat energy as the electricity used for compression. The report does not provide a full independent test protocol or a seasonal performance series. That reported ratio should not be treated as a universal coefficient or as evidence that bills will fall by a particular amount: costs depend on the building, system design, electricity tariff, and heating demand.

How HotTwist works in a heating system
HotTwist is a component in a water-source heat-pump installation, not a standalone household heater. In the arrangement described by New Atlas, glycol circulates through a spiral of pipes in a water tank, absorbing heat from source water. The heat pump raises the temperature, and heated fluid serves radiators or underfloor heating before returning to the exchanger.
SeaWarm describes the exchanger as corrosion-resistant plastic in a bespoke outdoor HDPE tank. The company says its design is intended to draw heat from water sources and incorporate latent heat released as ice melts. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independently verified performance findings.

Potential water sources and installation distance
SeaWarm lists seawater, rivers, mine water, and wastewater as possible heat sources. It says a HotTwist exchanger can be installed as far as 500 m from a water body, either buried or at the surface, with a pumped or gravity-fed connection. The 500-m distance is a general manufacturer claim, not approval or confirmation that a particular site is suitable.
The company also says the same volume of water can hold up to 3,400 times as much thermal energy as air. This is a company comparison, not a measure of a complete heating system’s efficiency or bill savings. Source-water temperature and flow, the building’s heat demand, system design, electricity prices, and site conditions all affect actual performance.

What a property owner should assess
A water-source system is only a practical option if the source, connection, building, and installation can work together. Before treating a headline saving as relevant to a project, assess:
- Source access: whether a suitable water body or other source is available and can be connected to the property.
- Water conditions: the source’s seasonal temperature and flow, and whether those conditions suit the proposed system.
- Building demand and emitters: the property’s heat loss and whether its radiators or underfloor heating can meet demand at the system’s operating temperatures.
- Whole-project costs: equipment, excavation or other connection work, installation, maintenance, and the local cost of electricity.
- Permissions and site constraints: what engineering assessment and any relevant approvals the specific installation requires.
- Evidence quality: whether a proposed performance estimate is supported by measured results for comparable buildings and a full heating season.
The available reporting does not establish current pricing, installation availability by territory, maintenance history, or independently verified seasonal results for HotTwist. New Atlas said additional test runs were planned to evaluate viability.

How it compares with air-source and ground-source heating
The available sources do not provide comparable costs or field-performance data for water-source, air-source, and ground-source systems, so they do not establish a universal winner. A meaningful project comparison should use the same building, local energy prices, expected seasonal efficiency, installation scope, maintenance assumptions, and evidence standard. Access to a suitable water source and the cost and feasibility of connecting it may be decisive for HotTwist.
