You can make a cardboard Nerf-inspired prop as a non-firing costume or display piece. This guide covers a simple decorative silhouette; it does not provide a launcher design, and the finished craft should never be used to fire darts or other projectiles.
Materials for a decorative cardboard prop
These are ordinary craft suggestions, not tested construction specifications. Gather:
- Corrugated cardboard or a clean cardboard box
- Pencil, ruler and scissors or a craft knife
- Glue or masking tape
- Markers, paint or colored paper for decoration
If a child is helping, have an adult handle any craft knife and supervise cutting and assembly.
Make a non-firing silhouette
- Draw the outline. Sketch a simple, one-sided blaster-like shape on cardboard, including a broad body and a handle. Keep the design flat rather than building a working mechanism.
- Cut out the shape. Use scissors for cardboard they can cut safely; an adult should use a craft knife where needed. Cut a second matching outline if you want the prop to feel less flimsy.
- Join the layers. Glue or tape the matching pieces together and let the adhesive set. Do not add a trigger, spring, elastic, tube, or other part intended to launch anything.
- Decorate it. Add colored paper, markers, or paint. Avoid details that could be mistaken for a real firearm, especially if the prop will be carried in public.
- Keep it a prop. Do not load it with darts or other objects, and do not point it at anyone as if it were a working blaster.
Safety: commercial Nerf instructions do not validate homemade launchers
Hasbro’s official instructions for the Nerf Minecraft Ender Dragon blaster state: “TO AVOID EYE INJURY: WARNING: Do not aim at eyes or face.” They also recommend eyewear for players and people within range, direct users to use only official Nerf darts, and warn against modifying the blaster or darts. These directions apply to the named commercial product; they do not establish that a homemade cardboard device is safe to fire. Read Hasbro’s Ender Dragon blaster instructions.

Hasbro’s Disruptor instructions likewise caution against aiming at eyes or faces and against modifying the blaster or darts. Read Hasbro’s Disruptor instructions. Do not use Nerf darts in a homemade device. Eyewear does not make a homemade launcher safe; the craft described here is for display or costume use only.
For commercial foam-dart play, Hasbro recommends protective eyewear for players and people within range. Clear safety glasses are one possible way to meet that general eyewear consideration, but Hasbro’s cited instructions do not name a model or technical standard, and glasses are not a safety guarantee.

Age and small-parts considerations
Hasbro lists the Ender Dragon blaster for ages 8 and up and includes a choking-hazard warning for small parts. That age label applies to the commercial product, not this craft. Keep small craft materials away from young children and supervise children during cutting and assembly.
