Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your Heatilator gas fireplace will not turn on, first identify its model and ignition system, then follow the matching owner’s manual. Standing-pilot relighting steps do not apply to every unit, and causes such as a failed flame sensor or plugged pilot orifice may require a qualified technician. These checks can help you narrow down the symptom without guessing at a reset sequence or attempting unsafe repairs.
Start with the model and ignition type
Find the fireplace’s model and serial number, then locate the matching owner’s manual in Heatilator’s manuals library. The controls, reset procedure, battery requirements, and lighting instructions can vary by model. Identify whether your unit has a standing pilot or intermittent-pilot ignition before following any lighting instructions.
Heatilator directs owners to an authorized dealer for service, troubleshooting, product questions, and parts; it does not ship service parts directly to consumers. If you are uncertain about the model or a procedure, contact a dealer rather than applying instructions for a different fireplace. See Heatilator support resources.
What to check when the fireplace will not turn on
Standing pilot is out
Use this approach only if your fireplace has a standing pilot, and check its manual and printed safety label first. Heatilator’s standing-pilot guide says the controls are usually beneath the firebox; a decorative front may need to be removed to reach them.
#1 Best Overall
- REALISTIC GLOWING EMBER EFFECT – Rock wool mineral fiber glows like live coals wherever the flame makes contact, instantly transforming a gas fireplace or gas log set into a convincing wood-fire scene. Simply pinch small clumps and place near gas ports on the burner pan or on logs where flames touch.
- MADE IN THE USA – Proudly manufactured in America using 100% asbestos-free mineral fiber. Unlike imported alternatives, Midwest Hearth Rock Wool is formulated to U.S. quality standards and has been trusted by homeowners and professional fireplace installers for over a decade.
- COMPATIBLE WITH NATURAL GAS AND PROPANE APPLIANCES – Works with vented gas fireplaces and gas log sets. May also be used with unvented (vent-free) appliances; always follow your appliance manufacturer's instructions for vent-free applications, as requirements vary by unit. Compatible with both NG and LP systems.
- INSTALLER-APPROVED TIPS FOR BEST RESULTS – For enhanced ember glow, use a stiff bristle brush to lightly flick a dusting of rock wool onto logs where flames will touch. Lightly spritz the log with water first to help the wool adhere. Do not pack wool tightly over gas ports — the flame must be able to breathe.
- LASTS FOR YEARS – Mineral fiber composition resists extreme temperatures and does not deteriorate with repeated use. One 6 oz bag is sufficient to dress a full-size fireplace burner pan, with material left over for future touch-ups. Can be paired with lava rock or vermiculite for added depth and realism.
- Check the manual for the location and operation of the controls. Follow its safety warnings before opening or removing anything.
- Check whether the igniter produces a spark. If it does not, stop and consult the manual’s troubleshooting steps rather than assuming the pilot is the problem.
- If the manual’s procedure matches your controls, set the knob to “pilot,” hold it in, and press the igniter. After the pilot lights, continue holding the knob for about 30 seconds, as the standing-pilot guide describes.
- If it does not light, wait five minutes before another attempt. Once lit, the guide says to let the pilot burn for a few minutes, return the knob to “on,” and reinstall the glass and decorative front as directed by the manual.
These are standing-pilot directions, not a universal lighting procedure. Do not try them on an intermittent-pilot system.
Pilot sparks but does not light
An April 2024 Heatilator M-series manual lists several possible causes for the M-series appliance it covers: a closed gas shutoff valve, air in the gas line, a plugged pilot orifice, a misaligned electrode, no gas supply, a loose ground wire, or weak batteries. This is a model-specific diagnostic list, not a diagnosis for every Heatilator fireplace.

Do not attempt pilot-orifice work without the required tools and experience; the manual directs owners to a qualified technician for that repair. If the pilot still will not light after following the exact model’s instructions, stop rather than repeatedly trying different procedures.
Pilot lights, then goes out
The same M-series manual lists a weak pilot flame, loose wiring, or a faulty flame sensor as possible causes when the pilot will not remain lit. These faults may require technical diagnosis. Do not adjust the pilot or replace a sensor based only on a general troubleshooting list; use your model’s manual and arrange qualified service if the problem persists.

No spark or unresponsive controls
For the M-series appliance covered by the April 2024 manual, possible causes of a missing spark include loose wiring, a remote-control setting, or weak batteries. Check the relevant controls and battery instructions in your own manual. Wiring checks and repairs are not a universal homeowner fix; contact a qualified technician if the manual does not resolve the issue.
Will it work during a power outage?
That depends on the ignition system. Heatilator says a standing-pilot fireplace should light without electricity, though you may need to relight the pilot according to its manual. Intermittent-pilot systems generally need electricity to spark the pilot for each use; some have battery backup.

- ★ CHECK REMOTE COMPATIBILITY WITH YOUR GAS FIREPLACE: To find a compatible remote for your gas fireplace, first determine the type of gas valve it uses. This information is usually in the installation manual under "Wiring Diagram" or on the rating plate inside or behind the fireplace. If you don't have the manual, search online using your model number. Our remotes are compatible with Millivolt valves that have TH and TH/TP terminals.
Heatilator gives these general battery guidance figures, but the exact model manual takes precedence:
| Ignition system | General outage battery guidance | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| IntelliFire | Generally two D-cell batteries | Confirm the system and battery instructions in the exact model’s manual. |
| IntelliFire Plus | Generally four AA batteries | Confirm the system and battery instructions in the exact model’s manual. |
Heatilator says batteries are for outage backup and should be removed when they are not being used during an outage. Battery backup is not a fix for an unrelated ignition fault. See the manufacturer’s battery-backup guidance and verify the required size and installation instructions for your fireplace.

How to reset a Heatilator fireplace
Heatilator’s support page lists a video for resetting IPI+, but it does not provide the steps as text. Use the reset video and your exact model’s manual rather than trying a guessed button sequence or power cycle. If the prescribed reset does not work, contact an authorized dealer or qualified technician. Start at Heatilator support resources.
When to stop and call for service
Stop troubleshooting if the manual tells you to stop, you are unsure of a step, or the fault involves wiring, a flame sensor, or the pilot orifice. The M-series manual says repairs and replacement should be handled by a qualified service technician; it also instructs readers to shut off the gas and let the appliance cool before service, and to check for leaks after service. Follow the printed instructions for your model.
If you smell gas, do not keep trying to light or restart the fireplace. Follow the gas-emergency instructions printed for your appliance and contact the gas supplier or a qualified service professional as directed. The M-series manual says: “If appliance will not operate, follow the instructions ‘TO TURN OFF GAS TO APPLIANCE’ and call your service technician or gas supplier.”
Keep the fireplace safe and maintained
Heatilator recommends professional inspection at least once a year. Its fireplace safety guidance also advises owners to:
- Keep combustible materials away from the fireplace and maintain the safety screen while it is operating.
- Never leave a fire unattended, and keep children and pets away.
- Install a carbon monoxide detector.
- Remember that the glass and nearby metal can remain hot after the fire is off.
For routine maintenance, use Heatilator’s maintenance checklist or arrange service through an authorized dealer.
