To skip an outside miter in baseboard molding, fit a corner block at the outside corner and run the baseboard into it. WOOD Magazine describes the block as a baseboard alternative to mitered door-casing corners; it also says the blocks take bumps from shoes and vacuums. WOOD Magazine’s instructions focus on making the blocks in a workshop.
How to make a baseboard corner block
WOOD Magazine Staff’s instructions, published October 18, 2016, suggest starting with a square blank and shaping it to suit the trim and room. These are suggested dimensions, not a universal fit: check the block against your baseboard before making a set.
- Cut the blank. Make a block about 1 to 1½ inches square.
- Ease the exposed edges. Add a ⅛-inch round-over to the three edges that will remain visible.
- Add optional decoration. For a more finished or traditional look, rout a profile across all four faces at the top end. This detail is optional.
- Shape for the corner. For an outside corner, add a ¼-inch notch. For an inside corner, use a chamfer. WOOD Magazine says these features help the blocks accommodate drywall imperfections.
- Fit and install. Test the block against the wall and adjoining baseboard before installation, adjusting the fit to your actual trim and corner.
Why use a block instead of an outside miter?
The block becomes the visible transition at the corner, so the baseboard ends meet it rather than needing to meet each other at a miter. That can simplify this particular outside-corner detail. WOOD Magazine also notes that the blocks take bumps from shoes and vacuums.
This approach avoids the outside miter at the block; it does not eliminate every miter elsewhere in a trim installation. The article describes shop-made blocks and does not establish the availability or dimensions of any particular ready-made product. If buying instead, check the listed size and whether the block is intended for the corner type you need.
