What builds up in unwashed bedding?
Dust mites can live in mattresses and bedding. They feed on flakes of shed skin, and their allergens can be a concern for people who are allergic to dust mites or have asthma. The CDC identifies dust mites as a possible asthma trigger; triggers differ from person to person.
That is a reason to keep bedding clean, not evidence that a missed laundry day is dangerous. The official guidance cited here does not establish a household germ count or show that delayed sheet washing inevitably causes illness.
How often should you wash your bedding?
Use weekly washing and complete drying as a practical baseline. The CDC’s asthma guidance says, “Wash your bedding weekly and dry it completely.” The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) also recommends weekly laundering as part of dust mite prevention.

The CDC’s laundry guidance concerns healthcare facilities, not ordinary household laundry, and should not be used to infer that leaving home bedding unwashed causes infection. Its discussion of contaminated fabrics in healthcare settings is not household risk guidance.
