Move sheet goods safely by planning the route and destination, checking the panel’s size and weight, and choosing equipment suited to the job. Use a forklift or crane for packs, a rated sheet trolley for site transport, and a suitable panel lifter for wall or ceiling installation. Hand-carry only when the individual sheet is manageable for the trained handlers and conditions; secure stored sheets so they cannot tip or slide.

Plan the move before lifting

Sheet dimensions and weight vary substantially by material and thickness. SafeWork SA gives typical examples from 1200 × 2400 mm to 1350 × 6000 mm, weighing around 10 kg to over 40 kg per sheet. The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) gives another example: a 2440 × 1220 mm sheet of 18 mm plywood at approximately 30 kg. These are examples, not a universal safe carrying limit. Check the product information or otherwise establish the load’s weight before choosing a method.

Before delivery or movement, identify the destination, check that the ground and route suit the load and equipment, clear obstructions, and leave enough space to turn or position the panel. Keep storage close to the installation point to reduce repeat handling. Brief everyone involved on the method, balance points, guiding and supporting roles, and signals. Wind can make large panels difficult to control outdoors.

Consider whether narrower or lighter sheets are practical for the task. Arrange delivery and any forklift, crane, trolley, or panel lifter in advance. Equipment must be suitable for the sheet and conditions, within its manufacturer’s limits, and operated by trained workers.

Choose equipment for the task

Task Suitable aid Key checks
Moving a pack of sheets Suitable forklift or crane Use trained operators; confirm the equipment, lifting method, load, route, and ground are suitable.
Transporting sheets across a site or workshop Heavy-duty trolley designed for long sheet materials Check capacity, castors for the ground, condition and maintenance. Do not overload; use two people to guide and support the trolley.
Placing sheets on a wall or ceiling Panel lifter Confirm it suits the sheet’s size and weight, is maintained, and is used by trained workers.
Manual movement of an individual sheet Panel carrier or carrying handles, where appropriate These can improve grip and posture, but do not make every sheet safe for one-person carrying. Assess the load and task first.
Feeding panels in a workshop Lifting hooks, panel trolleys, or, for larger-board operations, vacuum-handling systems Choose features for the workflow, such as locking casters, tilting beds, movable fences, or height adjustment. Poorly maintained trolleys can create additional risks.

SafeWork SA recommends a trolley designed for long sheet materials and two people to guide or support it. A panel lifter, trolley, and carrier serve different purposes; none should be treated as interchangeable. HSE describes these and other woodworking aids in its Manual handling solutions in woodworking (INDG318).

How to carry a sheet by hand

Manual carrying is appropriate only when the sheet, route, and handling method are manageable for the people doing the task. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) warns that “Handling sheet material single-handedly is always difficult and hazardous.” Its guidance recommends training, a clear route, suitable safety footwear, and gloves for grip and protection from splinters or sharp edges.

  • SIZE: 6.5 inches×14.6 inches (L×W), the width of handle part is 5.1 inches
  • GREAT LABOR SAVER: This is a simple tool that makes carrying a full sheet of plywood, drywall, hardboard by one people easily. • DESIGN FEATURES: The solid ABS plastic and the curve gives you better grip and leverage, the TPR soft rubber handle conforms to the ergonomic and gives your hands and arms needed help without breaking the edges
  • PERFECT FOR: Carrying sheets of plywood, drywall, panels, glass board, plaster board and so on, or just removing or installing the doors on your Jeep
  1. Stand close to the pile and take a firm grip at the middle of the sheet’s long edge.
  2. Bring the sheet toward your body and upright, supporting its lower edge.
  3. Stand up without bending and twisting at the same time.
  4. Keep the route unobstructed and use a cart where appropriate. If a cart is unavailable or the load is too awkward or heavy for one person, get help rather than attempting the carry alone.

For plasterboard, SafeWork SA advises teams of at least two for manual handling or unloading. Keep carry distances short and consider brief recovery breaks, task rotation, and breaking up long periods of handling. A panel carrier or handles may improve grip and help maintain a more natural arm and wrist posture; the right choice still depends on the sheet and task.

Store sheets so they cannot fall

Do not leave a heavy stack casually leaning against a wall. A falling stack can cause fatal or serious crush injuries. HSE’s 2010 safety alert reported at least three fatalities over the preceding seven years, including a child; that is historical context, not a current annual figure. HSE says purpose-designed storage racking can prevent this type of incident.

When storing sheets on edge, use a stable rack or frame designed for the load, with suitable restraints. Account for stability and unbalanced loads, and separate different sheet types and sizes rather than leaving them unsupported against a wall. Before cutting straps or removing crate supports, consider whether the bundle could shift or become unstable. Use temporary restraint or purpose-designed support when needed. WorkSafe Queensland states: “Stacking of sheet materials without an adequate restraint is potentially very dangerous.”

SafeWork NSW’s 2012 alert concerns a fatal glass-sheet incident and extends its storage and handling warning to other sheet materials stored on edge. It cites a commonly recommended lean of 3–6 degrees from vertical for stable A-frame or designed racks, and 5–6 degrees for transportable racks, pallets, and stillages. These figures are guidance reported in that alert, not a universal engineered specification. Follow the rack design, load rating, and applicable workplace requirements.

Protect wood panels in storage

For structural wood panels, Weyerhaeuser advises protecting edges and ends. If panels are stored outdoors, place them on a level platform with blocking or stringers, not directly on soil. Cover them loosely so air can circulate, and keep them under a roof when possible. This is product guidance for wood panels; other materials and manufacturers may require different storage conditions. See Weyerhaeuser’s plywood storage and handling guidance.
