Heatherwick Studio’s Hatai is a planned mixed-use development on the former Narai Hotel site in Bangkok’s Silom district. Its defining image is a pair of hotel buildings shaped as stacked, glowing forms inspired by Thai lantern craftsmanship; the announced plan also includes two hotels and 5,200 square metres of public space. The project is not open: Hatai’s website reported 36% overall progress as of September 2026.
What is Heatherwick Studio’s Hatai project?
Hatai is Heatherwick Studio’s first project in Thailand, announced on 15 July 2025. It is planned for the historic site of the original Narai Hotel in Silom, Bangkok. The Narai first opened in 1968, according to hotel group IHG, which says timber from the original building’s wooden foundation was extracted for reuse in the new interior design.
The development is intended to combine hospitality, wellness, retail and public spaces. Its two hotels are the Six Senses and a new Narai Hotel; Heatherwick Studio’s announcement describes them as having more than 300 rooms together, alongside a wellness centre, ballroom and conference facilities.
Why are the towers described as lantern-inspired?
Heatherwick Studio describes the buildings as “a series of stacked, glowing forms,” drawing on traditional Thai lantern craftsmanship. The studio says the shape is meant to give the skyline a softer silhouette and make the development feel connected to its setting rather than like a blank, generic high-rise.

- REAL ARCHITECT STUDIO: Spark a passion for architectural design with a professional studio for kids. The kit combines authentic drafting tools with a unique magnetic building system. Kids sketch detailed floor plans and instantly turn them into 3D models using the included acrylic walls — the perfect blend of art and building.
- WATCH DRAWINGS POP INTO 3D INSTANTLY: Transform a flat sketch into a standing model in minutes. With the magnetic grid base and acrylic walls, kids can physically "snap" their floor plans into place. It’s a thrilling way to visualize space, test room layouts, and see their ideas stand tall immediately.
- ALL INCLUSIVE KIT: Everything a future architect needs in one box: magnetic grid floor-base, 30 magnetic acrylic walls (in 4 sizes), tracing paper, design patterns, blueprint-elements tracing sheets, reusable door & window wall-cling stickers, T-ruler and triangle, compass, dry-erase marker, drafting pencil with eraser, colored pencils, Architecture Adventure Book, and Step-by-step Design Learning Guide — Includes all required to plan, design, and build from the first layout to the final structure.
- ARCHITECTURE ADVENTURE BOOK & GUIDE: Much more than a manual — it’s a design journey! The included Architecture Adventure book teaches kids to "think like an architect" by revealing cool secrets, fun facts, and real lingo in a way that is easy to understand. Additionally, it includes a clear, illustrated instruction guide, so young builders can jump straight into creating their dream home.
- PLAN, DRAFT, BUILD: Learn the real-world architectural workflow in four fun steps. Plan the layout on the grid, draft crisp lines with the tools, decorate with textures, and build the structure vertically. It is a rewarding project that teaches logic, patience, and creative confidence.
Hatai’s own design page says the concept also takes inspiration from masks worn in traditional Thai Khon dancing. That is the project’s stated design reference, not an independent interpretation of the cultural tradition.
What public spaces are planned?
The proposal includes 5,200 square metres of new public space, including elevated walkways, according to Heatherwick Studio. The project’s descriptions present a public village with a green canopied plaza and native planting, a restored canal, a shrine, an open-air market, event spaces and a nursery.
