Peonies, narcissus, chrysanthemums, orchids, and lotus are five flowers associated with good fortune or prosperity in particular cultural traditions. Those meanings are symbolic, not a promise of wealth or luck—and they are not a universal list. Their growing needs differ just as much: chrysanthemums are garden plants, narcissus are bulbs, orchids include many kinds of plants, and lotus is aquatic.
Why these flowers are called lucky
Flower meanings depend on culture, color, and context. Cornell Botanic Gardens and UBC Botanical Garden discuss auspicious plants in Chinese New Year traditions, while other lists include different flowers. Treat the associations below as tradition-specific symbolism, not as claims that a flower causes financial success or good fortune.
Five flowers associated with luck and prosperity
Peony: riches and honor
Cornell Botanic Gardens says the peony is commonly called the “flower of riches and honor,” based on its role in Chinese mythology. A Shanghai cultural guide also associates peonies with prosperity, wealth, and honor. Cornell Botanic Gardens Shanghai cultural guide
Narcissus: good fortune and prosperity
In Chinese New Year traditions, Cornell Botanic Gardens describes narcissus as a symbol of good fortune and prosperity. Some narcissus are displayed in shallow dishes with water and pebbles; that is a cultural display method, not a general care recipe for every narcissus. Cornell Botanic Gardens

Lotus: purity and understanding
A 2025 editorial list includes lotus among flowers to plant for luck and describes it as representing purity and understanding. These meanings should not be treated as universal; flower symbolism varies across sources and communities. Ideal Home

There is no single care formula for these five. An outdoor perennial, a bulb, a houseplant, and an aquatic plant have different light, soil, water, and seasonal requirements. Chrysanthemums: sun, shelter, and drainage
The Royal Horticultural Society advises growing chrysanthemums in a warm, sunny, sheltered spot with fertile, moist but well-drained soil. They do poorly in shade, dry conditions, poor soil, or waterlogged ground, and most will not survive heavy frost. Their flowers bring color in late summer and autumn. Peonies, narcissus, orchids, and lotus: check local growing guidance
The sources cited here do not establish complete, climate-specific care instructions for these four plants. A 2025 Ideal Home article gives seasonal planting notes—bare-root peonies from October through March, narcissus bulbs typically in September, and lotus tubers in spring—but those windows should not be generalized across climates. Check local botanical-garden or extension guidance for your region, and confirm that the plant type suits your growing conditions. Ideal Home planting notes

Choose a flower that fits your space
- Decide where it will grow: indoors, in a garden bed, or in water.
- Identify what you are buying: a bulb, bare-root perennial, potted plant, or aquatic tuber needs different handling.
- Check local conditions: climate, planting season, light, and drainage matter more to success than a symbolic meaning.
- Keep meanings in context: color and tradition can change the symbolism; no flower guarantees luck or prosperity.
