Check the width and care instructions for the specific product, since oilcloths and other coated table coverings can differ.
Measure the table and calculate the cover size
Measure the tabletop itself—not just a listed or nominal size—and record its length and width. Choose the overhang, also called the drop, before buying or cutting. Add twice that amount to each tabletop dimension so the cloth extends by the same distance on opposite sides.
For example, a tabletop measuring 60 by 30 inches with a 3-inch drop on each side needs a piece measuring 66 by 36 inches. That is the result of the chosen measurements, not a universal recommendation for how much cloth should hang down.
For a round table, use its diameter as the tabletop measurement and add twice the desired drop. One supplier recommends 15–20 cm of overhang per side for rectangular tables and 30–40 cm added to a round table’s diameter; treat these as that supplier’s guidance rather than a standard for every table or material. Check the material width before ordering
Compare the finished cover dimensions with the usable width of the oilcloth. Ordering more length will not make a narrow roll wide enough to cover a broad tabletop in one piece. Oilcloth International lists its material as 47.5 inches wide and says it is sold by the yard in 36-inch increments; these are that supplier’s product and sales details, not general specifications for oilcloth. Its yardage guide shows how to calculate length and round up to the next yard.
If the required piece will not fit across the material, look for a custom-sized cloth or a maker who joins panels. Oilcloth Alley describes custom sizing with topstitched seams, which may be visible on the finished cover. Check how seams will fall and whether the print can be matched before ordering. Cut and place a simple loose cover
- Plan the dimensions: Measure the tabletop and choose the drop. Add twice the drop to both dimensions.
- Check the roll: Confirm its usable width and how it is sold. If the planned cover is wider than the material, choose a joined-panel or custom-sized option.
- Mark the cut: Measure and mark the finished dimensions on the reverse side. Use a ruler or straightedge to keep the lines square, and check the measurements again before cutting.
- Cut and center: Cut along the marked lines, then center the cloth on the table so the overhang is even.
Oilcloth International says its oilcloth does not fray, so its edges can be left unfinished. That guidance applies to that supplier’s product; check the construction and instructions for the oilcloth you bought. Its FAQ also says the material can be finished with bias tape or other fabric if you prefer a bound edge.
Choose whether to finish the edges
A raw edge is the simplest choice when the material permits it. For a sewn finish, Oilcloth International recommends a size 14 needle, monofilament thread, and a Teflon pressure foot. These are supplier-specific recommendations, not requirements for a loose cover. Check that they suit your material and machine before sewing. Optional: sew fitted corners
Fitted corners turn the cloth down around the tabletop instead of letting it hang freely. The amount of ease and corner fabric needed depends on the table’s thickness and corner shape, so treat any pattern as a starting point and check the fit before trimming.
- Measure the tabletop and add the planned overhang to both sides. One tutorial also adds 1/4 inch of ease to each tabletop dimension.
- Mark a square at each corner of the cut piece, using the table thickness and desired corner fit to determine its size.
- Fold a corner diagonally so the marked edges meet. Sew across the marked line, backstitching at both ends, then turn the corner right side out.
- Test the cover on the table. Adjust as needed before trimming any excess; the tutorial also describes leaving the folded excess in place as a simpler finish.

Follow the care instructions for your product
“Oilcloth” can refer to products with different materials and backings. Oilcloth International describes its modern oilcloth as vinyl with a poly/cotton scrim backing and says its product does not contain linseed oil. That description is specific to its material, not a definition of every coated table covering.
For its own oilcloth, Oilcloth International advises wiping with a soft, soapy cloth and rinsing with vinegar if needed to restore shine. It advises against machine washing, ironing, and machine drying, and cautions that prolonged exposure to strong sunlight can cause fading. Follow the care label or supplier instructions for your particular product, especially if it is a coated table linen rather than vinyl oilcloth. Oilcloth International’s FAQ gives its care guidance.

Do not confuse oilcloth with a rigid clear protector
A flexible printed oilcloth is meant to drape; a thick transparent PVC protector may be too stiff to hang over the edges. The supplier cited for clear protectors recommends ordering that product to the exact tabletop dimensions, with no overhang. Confirm the instructions for the protector you choose rather than applying oilcloth sizing rules to it. Oilclothonline’s guide distinguishes its measurement advice for these shapes and materials.
