A torii marks an entrance or boundary associated with sacred space. To construct one, first choose a style and scale: a small decorative model can be a woodworking project, but a permanent, full-size gate needs a site-specific design by qualified professionals. There is no single universal torii design, and the references below do not provide an engineered DIY plan.
Choose the torii style before drawing it
Two broad style families provide a useful starting point. The shinmei form has a straight upper crosspiece; the myōjin form has upper ends that curve upward. Other recognizable variations include sannō and the vermilion gates associated with Inari shrines. Details vary, so choose a documented example to guide the outline rather than treating one pattern as universal. The Association of Shinto Shrines describes these types in its overview of torii.
A typical frame has two upright posts, a projecting top member called the kasagi, and a lower tie beam called the nuki that links the posts. Some styles add a shimaki or other distinctive members. The Kokugakuin University Digital Museum’s torii entry explains the form and its variations.
Set the scale and draw the members
For a decorative model
Make a drawing before cutting material. Mark the post centers, post height, the kasagi’s projection beyond the posts, and the outline of the upper members. Decide whether the model represents a straight or curved style, then keep its proportions consistent with that choice. These are design decisions for your particular model, not a universal traditional cut list.

JAANUS records historical proportion guidance: a convention from the late sixteenth century put pillar diameter at about one tenth of the distance between pillar centers. It also summarizes geometric relationships attributed to the 1608 Shōmei. Those notes can inform visual study, but they are historical references—not modern structural calculations, a complete plan, or a specification for foundations and connections. See the JAANUS torii entry.
For a full-size gate
Do not scale a decorative drawing up and assume it will be safe. A freestanding gate must be designed for its location, including the selected material, member sizes, connections, foundations, exposure, wind and seismic conditions, and applicable local rules. The sources cited here do not establish allowable spans, foundation details, joinery dimensions, engineering calculations, or permitting requirements. Engage a qualified local designer or structural professional and consult the relevant permitting authority. Choose material for the project and setting
Torii are made from wood, stone, and other materials, depending on their purpose and scale. A cedar board may be a practical material to consider for a small decorative model, but its suitability for a permanent outdoor structure cannot be inferred from the fact that cedar has been used in torii construction.
The rebuild of Meiji Shrine’s First Torii Gate illustrates the difference. Nara Prefecture’s project account describes a lengthy search for suitable trees: Yoshino cedar was selected for the main posts, with cedar from other regions used for the main beams. Expert shrine carpenters worked closely on careful milling and precision processing. The account documents one exceptional project, not a home-build material specification or proof that retail lumber is appropriate for a load-bearing gate. Keep assembly separate from installation
Visually, the structure consists of uprights linked by cross members, but that description is not a safe assembly sequence for a full-size gate. The sources do not supply verified joinery dimensions or installation details. For a permanent structure, the design and the connection and foundation details need to be developed together for the site and then built to that design. For a decorative model, use a drawing appropriate to its scale and intended setting rather than borrowing structural assumptions from a photograph.

Published dimensions show how much size varies among individual gates; they are not general design targets. Nara Prefecture describes the rebuilt Meiji Shrine First Torii Gate as 10.1 meters high, with a 15.6-meter kasagi. The Miyajima Tourist Association describes Itsukushima’s O-torii as about 16.8 meters high, with main pillars approximately 13.4 meters tall and 9.9 meters in circumference, and a crossbeam approximately 23.3 meters long. These are measurements of named examples, not a recipe for another site. See the Miyajima Tourist Association’s O-torii page.
