Grow Vegetables and Flowers Together for a Healthier Garden

Flowers can add pollinator resources and support some beneficial insects in a vegetable garden, but they are not guaranteed pest repellents. Choose plants for local conditions, bloom timing, and bed layout.

Flowers can make a vegetable garden more welcoming to pollinators and some beneficial insects, but they do not guarantee fewer pests. The useful approach is to choose plants that provide floral resources, fit the bed’s light and space, and suit your climate—while treating pest-control claims, including claims about marigolds, cautiously.

How flowers can help a vegetable garden

Flowering plants can provide nectar, pollen, alternate prey, or habitat for pollinators and some predators and parasitoids. These insects may contribute to pollination or pest control, but their presence alone does not mean vegetable pests will decline: natural enemies must reach the crop and affect the pest in question. The University of Delaware Cooperative Extension notes that many traditional companion-planting claims have limited evidence and recommends focusing on these specific ecological mechanisms (University of Delaware Cooperative Extension, reviewed February 2025).

Annual flowers can grow around vegetable beds, and sweet alyssum can also be planted within beds to support beneficial insects. Consider it a source of floral resources, not a protective barrier or a substitute for monitoring and managing pests.

Which flowers and herbs to consider

There is no single best flower for every vegetable garden. Maryland Extension identifies mountain mint, anise hyssop, buckwheat, and flowering herbs such as cilantro and dill as plants popular with pollinators (Maryland Extension). Sweet alyssum is another practical option for growing in or near beds, according to Delaware Extension.

  • Sweet alyssum: Try it within or around a bed where it will not crowd vegetables.
  • Mountain mint and anise hyssop: Consider them where their mature size and growing conditions fit the garden.
  • Buckwheat: Consider it when its season and space needs work with the vegetable plan.
  • Cilantro and dill: Allow some plants to flower if you want to provide floral resources, while keeping harvest and bed space in mind.

For each choice, check local suitability, mature size, bloom timing, and whether the flowers offer accessible nectar or pollen. A plant that flowers when beneficial insects are active can be more useful than one that does not fit the garden’s season or layout. Penn State Extension also discusses herbs as plant partners and companions (Penn State Extension).

How to fit flowers alongside vegetables

Plan around the plants’ full-grown size, sunlight needs, spacing, and harvest timing. Flowers should add diversity without shading vegetables that need sun or taking space needed for a productive crop.

Use height and light to plan bed placement

Maryland Extension suggests placing low-growing, shade-tolerant greens on the north side of taller crops. This can use space beneath or beside taller plants while reducing the chance that the greens shade them. Check the mature height and sun requirements of the specific varieties you plant.

Pair crops with different harvest schedules

Short-season radishes can be grown with longer-season carrots, with radishes harvested before they crowd the carrots. This is a timing strategy: the early crop leaves space as the slower crop continues to grow. Maryland Extension’s guidance on vegetable succession and companion planting gives these layout examples (Maryland Extension).

Watch for competition and unintended effects

Interplanting is not automatically beneficial. Flowers may support pests as well as beneficial insects, and University of Florida IFAS describes research in which particular pests were more abundant on broccoli interplanted with certain flowers (University of Florida IFAS Extension). Observe what happens on your crops and adjust the planting if a combination appears to increase pest pressure or compete for light and space.

Do marigolds keep pests away from vegetables?

Do not count on a few marigolds beside vegetables to repel pests or control nematodes. Delaware Extension explains that marigolds’ nematode effects work better when they are used as a cover crop and their residues are tilled in before the next crop. That is different from planting a few flowers alongside vegetables, and it should not be treated as assured control.

For any claimed pest effect, look for evidence tied to the specific crop and pest rather than assuming a pairing works across the garden. Flowers can support useful insects, but they are not guaranteed repellents.

What the evidence says about pest control

A quantitative synthesis by Albrecht and colleagues found that flower strips enhanced pest-control services in adjacent agricultural fields by 16% on average. The 2020 synthesis covered 18 pest-control studies and 17 pollination studies in North America, Europe, and New Zealand; effects on pollination and crop yield were more variable (Albrecht et al., 2020).

This result concerns flower strips beside fields, not every mix of flowers in a home garden. It supports the possibility that flowering habitat can improve pest-control services at a broader scale, but it does not establish a guaranteed reduction in pests or a yield increase for an individual gardener.

A practical way to choose a planting

  1. Start with the crop and the problem. Note which vegetable and pest concern you have. Do not assume a flower helps unless the claimed effect relates to that particular crop and pest.
  2. Choose flowers suited to your location. Consider sweet alyssum, mountain mint, anise hyssop, buckwheat, cilantro, or dill where local conditions and the plant’s mature size make them suitable.
  3. Check bloom timing and resources. Favor plants that fit the season and can provide accessible nectar or pollen when they flower.
  4. Map the bed before planting. Account for mature height, sunlight, spacing, and harvest timing. Use height or staggered harvests to make efficient use of space without crowding vegetables.
  5. Observe the result. Check both beneficial insects and crop pests. If a combination increases pest pressure or interferes with crop growth, change the layout or remove the problematic planting.
