Choose an outdoor wood finish by balancing moisture protection, UV resistance, grain visibility, application effort, and upkeep. Penetrating oil is relatively easy to apply and renew; paint gives the strongest UV protection but hides the wood; clear outdoor varnish shows the grain but needs maintenance; and epoxy creates a strong moisture barrier only when protected from UV by a suitable topcoat. No finish is maintenance-free.
Outdoor wood faces two main threats: moisture and ultraviolet (UV) light. The right finish depends on which threat matters most for your project and how much of the wood’s natural appearance you want to preserve. The guidance below is practical advice from Vince Ancona’s WOOD magazine article, “Great Finishes for the Great Outdoors,” updated July 27, 2022; it is not a controlled comparison. Product labels and current technical data sheets take priority for specific application details.
Compare the main outdoor finish options
| Finish | Moisture and UV protection | Appearance | Effort and upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Penetrating oil | Soaks into the wood and helps limit moisture uptake. Pigmented versions block UV and can inhibit mold and mildew. | Preserves a more natural wood appearance than an opaque paint film. | Relatively easy to apply and renew, but offers less protection than the other approaches. Ancona gives a typical renewal interval of 2–5 years; actual timing depends on the product and exposure. |
| Paint | Provides the strongest UV protection among the options discussed. | Hides the natural grain. | Creates a film finish; follow the chosen exterior paint’s preparation and maintenance directions. |
| Outdoor varnish | A clear film finish. Spar or marine varnish is designed to remain more flexible as wood expands and contracts. Clear-finish UV inhibitors last only a few years, according to Ancona. | Shows the grain. | Ancona recommends at least three coats and says maintenance is usually needed every 2–3 years. It needs regular attention. |
| Epoxy with UV-protective topcoat | Epoxy forms a water-impermeable barrier but does not protect the wood from UV by itself. Overcoat it with spar varnish or UV-inhibiting polyurethane. | Builds a protective surface system; the final appearance depends on the chosen topcoat. | Most expensive and labor-intensive of the approaches compared, and best suited to accessible, relatively flat surfaces. |
Choose by the job’s priorities
Use penetrating oil when easy renewal matters
Oil is a practical choice when you want a relatively straightforward finish to apply and refresh. Pigmented oil adds UV protection that clear oil does not provide to the same degree. It is not the strongest overall barrier in this comparison, so consider how exposed the project will be and whether you are willing to renew the finish.
Use paint when UV protection takes priority over visible grain
If the wood’s natural grain does not need to show, paint is the clearest choice in this comparison for UV shielding. It forms a film rather than soaking into the wood. Use an exterior paint system appropriate to the project and follow its preparation and recoating instructions.

#1 Best Overall
- Exterior-rated penetrating oil helps protect wood from the elements
- Contains stabilizers and twice the oil content to protect your exterior outdoor wood projects
- Use Outdoor Oil for all exterior outdoor wood projects, particularly wood furniture
- It can be used by itself, over any stain, and on pressure-treated wood. NOTE: Outdoor Oil may not adhere to extremely oily exotic woods
Use outdoor varnish when you want a clear grain-visible film
Outdoor spar or marine varnish is intended to flex more than a less flexible film as wood moves with changing conditions. That flexibility does not make it maintenance-free: Ancona recommends at least three coats and gives 2–3 years as the usual maintenance interval. Clear varnish’s UV inhibitors also have a limited service life, so inspect it and renew it as needed.
Use epoxy under a UV-resistant topcoat when moisture exclusion is paramount
Epoxy offers the strongest moisture barrier described here, but leaving it exposed is not a complete outdoor finish: it supplies no UV protection itself. Protect it with spar varnish or UV-inhibiting polyurethane. Its mixing, working time, and layered application make it a more demanding approach than oil, and it is most practical on surfaces you can reach and prepare evenly.

- Easy to Use - Tung oil is a natural oil recognized by craftsmen to offer the ultimate hand-rubbed finish for all fine woods; just wipe on and allow the oil to cure at room temperature
- Permeates - Unlike other finishes that form a film on the wood’s surface, tung oil penetrates deep into the wood fibers, cures to a flexible non-oily solid, and becomes part of the wood itself
- Protects - Resistant to moisture, alcohol, oil, and everyday wear for lasting beauty and protection; lasts many times longer than mineral oil and wax based products
- Multi Use - Amazing results on almost any surface that will allow the oil to penetrate - new unfinished wood, weathered wood, stripped wood, concrete floors and countertops, even brick, stone, and cast iron
- Great for Food Contact Surfaces - Since tung oil is considered non-toxic when dry, it is great for cutting boards, butcher blocks, countertops, wooden bowls, wooden utensils, and more
Apply the finish carefully
Penetrating oil
- Stir the oil thoroughly. Apply it by brush, roller, or sprayer as the product allows.
- Allow it to penetrate for the time specified by the manufacturer. Ancona cites 10–30 minutes as a typical wait, not a universal instruction.
- Wipe away excess with a clean, lint-free rag. Dispose of oily rags safely according to product directions and local requirements.
Varnish
- Stir and strain the varnish before application.
- Apply with a suitable fine brush, using even strokes and maintaining a wet edge.
- Follow the product’s drying directions between coats. Ancona suggests sanding imperfections with 220-grit paper between coats and recommends at least three coats; verify both details against the selected product’s instructions.
Epoxy system
- Gather tools and materials before mixing because epoxy’s working time is limited.
- Follow the resin maker’s mix ratio exactly and apply multiple thin coats while avoiding bubbles.
- Ancona describes three to four coats, at least 48 hours of curing before leveling, and a varnish topcoat. These are article-specific recommendations, not universal specifications; follow the epoxy and topcoat manufacturers’ current instructions.
Account for weather and vulnerable end grain
Check the product’s temperature and humidity limits before starting. Ancona advises working in warm, dry weather and avoiding direct sun and breezy conditions, which can contribute to premature drying or dust contamination. Protect end grain at feet or legs near the ground: the article suggests soaking those ends in penetrating oil or sealing their bottoms with epoxy. Use the chosen product’s directions to confirm that approach is appropriate.

Outdoor finishes require attention over time. Oil is comparatively easy to renew; paint emphasizes UV protection over grain visibility; varnish preserves the grain but calls for periodic maintenance; and epoxy needs a UV-protective topcoat. Treat the intervals above as practical guidance from Ancona’s 2022 article, not guarantees: exposure, product formulation, and application affect service life. Inspect the finish and use the current product label or technical data sheet to decide when and how to maintain it.
