If your voice sounds hollow or calls echo, treat reflections inside the office with absorptive materials. If noise is coming through a door, window, or wall, address the route it travels; acoustic panels and soft furnishings do not soundproof a room.
First identify the noise problem
Stand in the office and listen for the source and character of the sound. A ringing, hollow quality—especially in a room with bare walls, hard floors, and large windows—points to sound reflecting inside the room. Noise that arrives from another room or outdoors is a transmission problem: sound is passing through or around a building boundary.
- Echo or harsh-sounding calls: reduce reflections with absorptive materials on suitable surfaces.
- Noise entering around a door: inspect the gaps and consider perimeter seals and a bottom sweep.
- Noise through a window or wall: identify the transmission path before buying treatment. Curtains may soften reflections at a window, but they are not a substitute for sound isolation.
The distinction matters because absorption and sound isolation do different jobs. The Home Depot guide to soundproofing a room discusses treatments for both categories, while Studio AM’s general reference cautions that absorptive treatment does little to block sound through walls and doors.
If the office echoes, soften reflective surfaces
Start with the hard, exposed surfaces closest to your desk. Fabric-wrapped acoustic panels can absorb some reflections near the work area; a thick rug and rug pad can help on a hard floor; and curtains can soften reflections at windows. These are targeted room-acoustics measures, not a way to block sound passing through the building.

Place treatment where it addresses exposed reflective surfaces rather than covering the room indiscriminately. The available guides do not establish a tested head-to-head ranking, a guaranteed improvement, or a verified price for a particular home-office setup. Results depend on the room and the materials used.
If sound leaks around a door, seal the gaps
A door can have small openings at its sides, top, or bottom. Weatherstripping around the perimeter and a door sweep or draft stopper at the bottom can reduce leakage through those gaps. For small cracks or seams, the Home Depot guide describes acoustical caulk or sealant.

- Inspect the door: look for visible gaps around the frame and beneath the door.
- Measure before buying: match weatherstripping and the sweep to the gap and door, including the clearance needed for the door to move.
- Fit and test: install the seals, then check that the door closes and latches normally.
- Use sealant only for suitable seams: it can address minor cracks, not structural sound transmission through a wall or door assembly.
These measures target openings; they do not turn a lightweight door or the surrounding wall into a sound-isolating assembly.
Know what DIY treatments cannot fix
Soft furnishings and ordinary foam have limits, especially for bass. The Home Depot guide, published September 5, 2023, states: “Low frequencies below 250 Hertz aren’t handled by regular soundproofing foam or carpeting.” It also says, “Two-inch foam is the industry standard for recording booths.” That retailer guidance is not a blanket performance promise for a home office: foam treatment does not by itself prevent sound from passing through walls or doors.

If the main problem is strong low-frequency noise or sound transmitted through a wall, a rug, curtain, or small patch of foam is unlikely to address the whole path. The cited guides do not provide a tested construction specification or a guaranteed result for that situation.

- Hollow voice in a mostly bare room: try a rug with a pad on a hard floor or suitable absorptive panels near the work area.
- Bright reflections from a large window: consider curtains for the reflective surface, without expecting soundproofing.
- A noticeable gap at the door: measure it, then choose compatible weatherstripping or a sweep.
- Small crack at a seam: consider acoustical sealant if the gap is appropriate for that product.
- Noise through a wall, or low bass: do not assume soft furnishings will solve it; identify the transmission route before committing to a larger fix.
For a construction-minded approach, make one targeted change at a time and listen again under similar conditions. That makes it easier to tell whether the treatment addressed the actual source or merely changed how the room feels.
