Google Bay View is a Mountain View, California campus whose distinctive canopy roof combines architecture with building-integrated solar shingles. Google calls the textured glass surface “dragonscale”; it is not a conventional array of flat panels added after construction. The exact panel count depends on whether a source is describing Bay View alone or grouping it with another project.
What is Google Bay View?
Bay View is part of Google’s Mountain View headquarters landscape, not the company’s sole headquarters. Google announced the campus opening on May 17, 2022, and described it as the first major campus it developed itself. Construction began in 2017. Google Real Estate lists the campus at 1.1 million square feet and describes it as all-electric and water positive.
Google says the design process prioritized the people using the workplace and aimed to create an adaptable campus. The campus’s pavilion-like roof form is one of its most visible features, but the project also includes a substantial geothermal system.
What does “dragonscale” mean?
“Dragonscale” is Google’s name for the building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) roof treatment: small, prismatic glass solar shingles incorporated into the canopy design. Rather than placing ordinary flat panels on a finished roof, the solar surface is part of the building’s exterior. Google identifies SunStyle as the source of the prismatic glass shingle technology.

- 【200W N-Type 16BB High Efficiency】Built with advanced N-type monocrystalline cells and 16BB busbar technology, the Callsun 200 watt solar panel delivers up to 25.6% conversion efficiency. N-type cells provide excellent power generation and reliability, while the 16BB design helps reduce hot spots and microcrack risks for dependable long-term performance.
- 【400W Series Connection for Portable Power Stations】Pair two Callsun 200W panels in series to reach 400W total power, 47.48V Vmp and 54.62V Voc while maintaining 8.43A operating current. This configuration is well suited for many portable power stations with 60V-class solar input limits, helping maximize solar charging within supported voltage and current ranges.
- 【Boost Energy with Bifacial Technology】The Callsun 200W bifacial solar panel features a transparent backsheet that captures sunlight from both the front and rear sides. By utilizing direct, reflected and diffuse light, the bifacial design can generate additional energy from the rear side under suitable installation conditions, helping maximize overall solar output.
- 【TwinCell Anti-Shading Design】The Callsun 200W solar panel features a dual-module parallel design that divides the panel into two independently operating sections. When one section is partially shaded by trees, buildings or other obstacles, the other section can continue generating power. This design helps reduce the impact of partial shading and maintain more consistent energy production.
- 【Compact Design for RVs, Vans & Off-Grid Use】Each panel measures 51.3 × 30.3 × 1.4 inches and weighs 23.8 lbs, delivering strong power output in a compact footprint. This 200W solar panel is ideal for Class B vans, RVs, marine applications, rooftops and other space-conscious off-grid solar systems. Pre-drilled mounting holes make installation with compatible mounting hardware straightforward.
Google’s Asim Tahir said the team selected the textured shingles to make the solar layer work as an architectural surface. Google says the prism texture catches light that might escape conventional flat panels and reduces reflective glare that could affect drivers and pilots. Those are Google’s explanations of the design, not independent performance findings.
How is the roof intended to generate solar power?
The shingles sit across a canopy with multiple angles. Google’s design rationale is that a conventional flat array tends to reach peak output at a similar time of day, while the angled dragonscale canopy is intended to spread generation across a longer portion of daylight hours. Google says that broader profile can help limit contribution to California’s “duck curve,” the mismatch between solar generation and electricity demand over the course of the day. The cited project account does not provide independent hourly output measurements comparing the roof with a flat array.

Adopting 18 Busbars, it achieves 25.6% high efficiency and stable power output for all scenarios. A+ monocrystalline silicon minimizes microcrack risks; combined with 18BB silver-containing busbars, it ensures low degradation (≤1% first year, ≤0.4% annually) and extended service life, a reliable choice for RV or home backup power.
- 【IP68 Waterproof】Equipped with an exclusive IP68 Waterproof, our solar panels feature advanced potting technology that creates an impermeable seal to prevent water or steam from reaching internal wires. This design minimizes short-circuit risks to the greatest extent, effectively inhibits rust and corrosion, and ensures the solar panel maintains optimal performance even in harsh weather. The junction box’s excellent thermal conductivity enhances heat dissipation, further extending the lifespan of the entire 200w solar panel, which is essential for long-term use of solar panels for rv and outdoor applications.
- 【Up to 15% More Energy Output | Advanced Bifacial Design】Capture sunlight from both the front and rear sides for increased energy production. Under optimal reflective conditions, this bifacial 200 watt solar panel can generate up to 15% more energy than traditional single-sided panels, helping charge batteries faster and maximize solar harvest.
- 【Perfect Fit for Class B Vans & Easy Installation】Measuring 52.76 x 26.38 x 1.18 inches, this 200 watt solar panel is designed to maximize power in a compact footprint — ideal for Class B vans and other tight rooftop spaces. Each panel features pre-drilled holes on the back for quick, hassle-free mounting on large rail mounts or other surfaces, making installation faster and more secure.
- 【Fast Mounting & Easy Expansion】Pre-drilled design facilitates rapid installation with Z-shaped brackets, angled brackets or upright pole mounts. Freely adjustable angles comprehensively meet installation requirements across diverse scenarios.Standard MC4 plugs allow simple wiring and system growth.
Google’s 2022 opening account said nearby wind farms and the dragonscale solar skin were expected to power Bay View with carbon-free energy 90% of the time. That figure was a projection in that dated account, not a current measured result.
How many solar panels are on Bay View?
Published figures use different project boundaries, so there is no single panel total that can be quoted without naming the source and scope.
