Poland’s much-discussed glowing bike path was a 100-meter test section near Lidzbark Warmiński—not a network of solar-powered lanes. Its surface absorbs natural daylight and releases that stored light after dark. The project opened in 2016, and the available project accounts describe a luminescent pavement rather than solar panels, electricity generation or LED lighting.
Where the glowing path was built
The trial was installed on provincial road 511 near Lidzbark Warmiński, along the route toward Lake Wielochowskie. STRABAG announced its completion on 28 September 2016. The company described the section as 100 meters long and 2 meters wide. STRABAG’s 2016 announcement and the Olsztyn regional road authority’s project page document the location and design.
How the surface glows
The pavement contains luminescent aggregate mixed with light granite, according to the regional road authority. The material absorbs natural light during the day, stores it, and emits it in darkness. In that sense, “solar powered” is a convenient shorthand for daylight-charged glow. It should not be taken to mean that this Polish installation has photovoltaic panels or electrically powered lights. State Forests’ account of the project also describes the light-storing material.
The glow was blue. TPA president Igor Ruttmar explained the choice in STRABAG’s announcement: “For the construction of the path near Lidzbark Warmiński, we chose blue phosphors to maintain harmony with the Masurian landscape.”

How long does it stay bright?
Published project accounts differ slightly: STRABAG said the material could emit light for more than 10 hours, while the road authority says up to 10 hours. These are claims about the material’s reported capability, not an independent measurement of how long the path stayed visible on a particular night. The sources do not establish that it remains bright throughout every night or under every condition.
What the trial cost—and what that figure means
STRABAG reported that the 100-by-2-meter section took four days to build and cost PLN 120,000 net in 2016. Those are historical figures for this specific test installation, not a current price estimate for another road or a comparable project.

What the project does—and does not—show about safety
Making a path more visible at night was the project’s intended value, but the available accounts do not establish a measured reduction in crashes or prove that this surface is safer than conventional lighting. Launch-era coverage described plans to observe how the surface performed across weather and temperatures; a later evaluation or verified present-day condition is not established by the available sources.
