Not yet. A 2024 laboratory study showed that balsa wood colonized by a living bioluminescent fungus can emit a greenish glow under controlled conditions. It did not demonstrate a finished lighting product, useful illumination for a room or path, or installation in a home or park.
What the researchers made
In a study first published on 12 September 2024 in Advanced Science, Francis W. M. R. Schwarze and colleagues combined the fungus Desarmillaria tabescens with balsa wood (Ochroma pyramidale). They soaked balsa blocks and co-cultivated them with the fungus in a microfibrillated-cellulose growth medium. The strongest bioluminescence in their experiments came from blocks incubated for three months. Read the study in Advanced Science.
The wood did not glow immediately after the saturated blocks were removed from the growth medium. The researchers reported greenish light after about four hours of air exposure, as moisture evaporated from the surface. The emission peaked at 560 nm. They also found that moisture content mattered: the strongest emission was associated with relative wood moisture content of 700–1200%, with a reported optimum of 814 ± 44.8% after three months. These are results for the study’s experimental material, not household operating specifications.
The authors found that the fungus preferentially degraded hemicelluloses and lignin, while X-ray diffraction showed no change in the cellulose crystalline structure during colonization. They present the work as a method for developing fungal materials with stronger bioluminescence, not as a ready-to-install building product.

Why “passive lighting” needs qualification
Here, “passive” describes light produced by a biological system rather than an electrical lamp. It does not mean the wood is maintenance-free or self-sustaining. The reported process involved soaking and sterilizing the wood, cultivating it with a growth medium for months, and managing moisture and exposure to air. The study does not establish how long the glow lasts, what ongoing care it would need, or how it would perform outdoors or in ambient light.
Most importantly for construction, the reported emission peak is a wavelength, not a measure of how much light reaches a floor, room, or walkway. The cited study does not report brightness or illuminance results sufficient to show that the specimens could serve as functional room or path lighting.

Does this mean homes or parks can use glowing wood?
No deployment is established by the cited study or the Swiss federal research communication. Homes and parks are possible application contexts, not demonstrated installations. The sources do not establish field durability, service life, public-deployment safety certification, or performance as architectural or park lighting. The Swiss communication frames the work as a way to add functionality to hardwood and make greater use of deciduous wood that might otherwise be burned; it does not document a lighting system in use. Not all “glowing wood” works the same way
Other research uses engineered luminescent materials rather than a living fungus. Those approaches can involve phosphors or other light-emitting compounds incorporated into treated wood. Their mechanisms and fabrication differ from fungal bioluminescence, so findings about one type should not be treated as performance evidence for the other.

What this could mean for construction
The work is an early materials concept, not a substitute for specified lighting or a basis for designing a building or public space around self-illuminating timber. For construction decisions, the key distinction is between a laboratory specimen that emits light and a product shown to provide a measurable, reliable lighting service. The cited sources establish the former, not the latter.
