Yes—builders have made David J. Gingery’s homemade metal lathe, but it is a foundry-and-fitting project, not an assembly-only kit. The plan’s stated capacity is 7 inches of swing over the bed and 12 inches between centers. Expect to make patterns, mold and pour castings, and hand-fit the machine’s sliding surfaces; one builder reported months of part-time work and about 24 hours scraping the bed flat. Those figures describe that builder’s experience, not a schedule or result every build can promise.
What a Gingery-style lathe build entails
David J. Gingery’s The Metal Lathe is book two in Build Your Own Metal Working Shop From Scrap. Its construction approach starts with castings from the charcoal foundry and simple hand methods to make the bed. The builder then makes and fits the headstock, tailstock, carriage, and remaining assemblies using additional castings, common hardware, and improvised equipment.
The plan includes photographs and drawings on pattern-making, molding, casting, and finishing. Its contents and index also identify topics such as bed ways, the lead screw and split nut, countershaft, headstock spindle, sand casting, and a high-speed-steel tool bit. Those topic listings are not a complete bill of materials or a substitute for the instructions in the particular edition you use.
Capacity and design features
The publisher’s stated design figures are 7 inches of swing over the bed and 12 inches between centers. The described design also has an adjustable tailstock with set-over for taper turning, adjustable gibs in sliding members, and adjustable sleeve bearings in the headstock. These are plan specifications, not independent measurements of every machine built from it.

What builder reports can—and cannot—tell you
Two published builder accounts show both the work involved and the limits of drawing conclusions from a single machine. Lionel Oliver II documented cast bases and a bed, pattern-stock choices, and scraping and fitting. He also described castings that did not fill their molds when his furnace and crucible setup did not bring the metal hot enough. That is a report about his setup, not proof that every build will have the same casting problem.
David B. Doman reported working evenings and weekends for about nine months, including about 24 hours scraping the bed flat. He said his finished lathe turned steel and aluminum parts, but had less mass and rigidity than a commercial lathe and chattered when he attempted brass. These are one maker’s observations; they do not establish a universal build time, accuracy, or material capability.

Decide whether building or buying fits the goal
| Consideration | Gingery-style build | Small commercial lathe |
|---|---|---|
| Main outcome | Learn and carry out pattern-making, casting, hand-fitting, and machine assembly. | Obtain a machine intended to be ready for use, subject to its condition and setup. |
| Capacity evidence | The plan states 7 inches swing over bed and 12 inches between centers. | Depends on the particular machine; no single comparison figure is established here. |
| Time and fitting | Includes foundry work and substantial hand-fitting; one builder reported about nine months part-time and about 24 hours scraping the bed. | No consistent time comparison is established here. |
| Rigidity and cutting | One builder reported less mass and rigidity than a commercial lathe and chatter while turning brass. | Performance depends on the specific machine; no controlled comparison is established here. |
| Total cost | Cannot be established from the plan summary; include the cost of tools, materials, and foundry capability in your own estimate. | Varies by machine and condition; no current cost comparison is established here. |
The build is a stronger fit when making the machine is part of the goal and you can safely undertake the foundry and fitting work. If the primary need is a lathe for predictable production or work demanding greater rigidity, assess actual commercial machines against those requirements rather than assuming the homemade design will substitute for them.
Safety is part of the project design
Molten metal and casting
Molten-metal work can cause severe injury, and water contamination can cause explosions. The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance calls for a risk assessment and process controls, including inspected, prepared, and dried scrap; dry, prepared molds, ladles, and implements; maintained equipment; and controls that prevent water entering the process. Protective clothing and equipment should be selected for the specific process and risk assessment, not reduced to a generic checklist. Follow the requirements that apply where you work and the guidance for your particular furnace, metal, and workspace.

Work on a rotating lathe
HSE guidance states: “It is never acceptable to apply emery cloth directly by hand on a rotating CNC or manual metal working machine.” Cloth can snag and pull an operator toward the danger zone. The guidance describes tool-post-held methods that reduce this hazard. This is UK workplace guidance, not a replacement for local requirements or a project-specific risk assessment.
What to check before committing
- Get the actual plan edition. The public summaries do not establish the complete instructions, full dimensional drawings, exact alloy specification, or edition-specific bill of materials. Consult the plan itself rather than inferring these details from a contents list.
- Assess the whole process. This build involves foundry work, casting, hand finishing, and mechanical assembly. Confirm that your workspace, equipment, skills, and safety controls can support those stages before beginning.
- Plan for fitting effort. Builder reports describe scraping and fitting as substantial work. Treat those reports as context, not a guaranteed time estimate.
- Set realistic performance expectations. The published capacity figures describe the design. They do not guarantee the rigidity, accuracy, or cutting performance of an individual build.
Availability of the plans
The publisher has said it plans to retire at the end of 2026 and stop reprinting its books, and that its inventory is limited. This does not confirm current stock at the publisher or at any third-party seller. Check the publisher’s current listing and the edition details before relying on availability or price.
