5-Inch vs. 6-Inch Random-Orbit Sanders: How to Choose the Right Size

A 5-inch random-orbit sander favors maneuverability on smaller and mid-sized surfaces; a 6-inch model covers more area per pass on large surfaces. Check each tool’s specs and accessory fit.

Choose a 5-inch random-orbit sander for a maneuverable, general-purpose tool suited to smaller and mid-sized surfaces. Choose a 6-inch model when you have larger surfaces and want to cover more area per pass. That is Bosch’s manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that every 6-inch sander will work faster or produce a better finish; compare the specifications and accessories of the exact models you’re considering.

Choose a sander size for the surface

5-inch: maneuverability and general-purpose work

Bosch describes a 5-inch sander as a general-purpose option that is easier to maneuver on smaller or mid-sized surfaces. It is a practical starting point if your projects vary in size and control around edges or tighter areas matters.

6-inch: more coverage on large surfaces

A 6-inch sander covers more ground per pass, making it a better fit for large surfaces where that broader coverage is useful. The size guidance alone does not establish a particular time saving or finish quality; those depend on the specific tool, abrasive, material, and work method. Bosch’s U.S. Sanders catalog FAQ gives this 5-inch-versus-6-inch guidance.

Compare the model, not just the pad diameter

Pad size is only one part of the decision. Speed range, orbit diameter, power source, abrasive fit, and dust-collection connection vary by model. These manufacturer specifications describe individual tools; they are not an independent performance comparison.

#1 Best Overall
SKIL 5” Random Orbital Sander with Cyclonic Dust Box & 3pc Sanding Sheet - SR211601, Multicolor
  • POWERFUL - With a 2.8 amp motor and 13,000 orbits per minute, it's able to deliver a smooth performance over a variety of sanding applications.
  • EASY TO CLEAN DUST CONTAINER - The X-flow dust collector uses cyclone force to collect dust in it's easy-to-empty transparent container.
  • SPEED CONTROL - Variable speed control provides the right amount of power and control across different materials.
  • LOW VIBRATION - Through its ergonomic design and a soft rubber grip your hand stays comfortable while counterweight balance reduces hand fatigue from vibration. All so that you can work longer.
  • SAND IN TIGHT PLACES - With a compact size and ergonomic design This sander can get into tight spaces easily and maximizes user control.
Model Pad and power Speed and orbit Abrasive and dust collection
Bosch ROS20VSK 5-inch, corded 7,500–12,000 OPM; 3/32-inch orbit Standard 5-inch hook-and-loop discs, 8-hole pattern; dust collection and a vacuum hose adapter. Bosch lists a carrying case among included items.
Bosch GEX12V-5N 5-inch, cordless; battery not included 6,000–10,000 OPM; 3/32-inch orbit Dust bag or vacuum-hose interface; verify hose and adapter compatibility for your setup.
Makita BO5041K 5-inch, corded 4,000–12,000 OPM; 1/8-inch orbit 5-inch, 8-hole hook-and-loop discs; through-the-pad dust collection.

OPM means orbits per minute. The differing speed ranges and orbit diameters are model-specific specifications, not enough on their own to rank these sanders or predict results on a particular job.

Check abrasive and dust-collection fit

Match the disc to the pad

Confirm disc diameter, attachment style, and hole pattern in the chosen tool’s product information or manual. For example, Bosch specifies standard 5-inch, 8-hole hook-and-loop discs for the ROS20VSK. A disc that is the right diameter can still be a poor fit if its attachment or dust-hole layout does not match the tool.

BOSCH ROS20VSC Palm Sander, Variable Speed Random Orbital Sander
  • SMOOTH FINISH: pad dampening system designed to eliminate swirl marks on both flat and contoured surfaces
  • EASY DISC ATTACHMENT: through Bosch's signature Hook and Loop disc attachment system, sanding pads stick to the hand sander, acting like a Velcro-adhesion material
  • VARIABLE SPEED CONTROL: powerful 2.5 AMP motor allows speed to work-piece and task matching with ease; no-load OPM: 7,500-12,000
  • DUST COLLECTION: features a micro filter system for fine dust and trapping particles as small as a 1/2-micron in diameter. Durable and compact, the dust canister shows dust level and easily detaches for mess-free tasks
  • KIT CONTENTS: Includes sanding pad, sanding disc, dampening ring, dust canister, vacuum adapter and carrying bag

Confirm the vacuum or dust-bag connection

Dust collection options differ: the ROS20VSK lists a vacuum hose adapter, while the GEX12V-5N offers a dust bag or vacuum-hose interface. Check the actual hose and adapter fit rather than assuming that a connection will work across models. The specifications cited here do not establish comparative dust-capture rates.

Account for power and speed control

A corded model avoids relying on a tool battery, while a cordless model can suit work where a cord is inconvenient. Check what the package includes: the Bosch GEX12V-5N is a cordless 5-inch example, but its battery is not included, so you will need a compatible battery and should confirm whether a charger is also part of your setup.

DEWALT Random Orbit Sander, Variable Speed, 5-Inch (DWE6423), Power Source Corded Electric
  • 3-Amp motor spins the pad at 8,000 - 12,000 OPM
  • Separate counterweight design reduces vibration for improved comfort
  • Improved dust-sealed switch protects against dust ingestion for longer switch life
  • Dust port is designed to fit directly to the DWV010 or DWV012 dust collectors
  • Shorter height allows the user to get closer to the workpiece

Variable-speed ranges also differ among models. Use the tool’s instructions and the requirements of the material and finish to guide speed selection; pad size by itself does not tell you which speed settings a model offers.
