If your garage door opener is not working, the cause may be as simple as a dead remote battery or a blocked sensor—or it may be a problem with the door, track, springs, or other hardware. My Garage Door Services says it offers opener repair, replacement, and installation in Calgary. Start with the safe checks below; if the door binds, sticks, looks unbalanced, or still will not operate, arrange a professional diagnosis rather than forcing it.
What to check when a garage door opener is not working
An opener symptom does not necessarily mean the motor has failed. LiftMaster Canada lists several possible causes, including remote batteries, lubrication, misaligned safety sensors, an obstruction, track alignment, and broken springs. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of your door.
Try only simple, non-invasive checks
- Remote: Replace the remote’s batteries if it does not activate the opener. If a wall control works but the remote does not, the remote or its power source may be the issue.
- Door path: Look for objects or debris blocking the door’s path and remove them without reaching into moving parts.
- Safety sensors: Check visually for an obstruction near the sensors at the bottom of the tracks and whether the sensors appear aligned. Do not bypass the safety system.

When the door—not just the opener—may need attention
The opener runs but the door will not move
This symptom can involve the door or its hardware as well as the opener. LiftMaster identifies track alignment and broken springs among possible causes. Do not assume the motor needs replacement based on this symptom alone; have the system diagnosed if basic checks do not resolve it.

The door reverses while closing
A blocked path or misaligned safety sensors are among the possible explanations. Check for a visible obstruction and sensor alignment, but do not defeat or disconnect the sensors to make the door close.
The door binds, sticks, or appears out of balance
Stop operating it and contact a trained door-systems technician. The LiftMaster 8165 installation manual says safe service depends on following that model’s installation, operation, maintenance, and testing instructions. It directs readers to a trained technician if the door binds, sticks, or is out of balance, and warns against adjusting hardware under extreme tension. That manual is specific to the LiftMaster 8165, but its warning is particularly relevant to spring and cable work: do not attempt to adjust or repair tensioned parts yourself.

Repair, replace, or install a new opener?
Repair
Repair may be appropriate when the issue is limited to a correctable fault, but the door system should be assessed when the problem persists or involves the track, springs, balance, or other hardware. LiftMaster Canada advises: “Contact a LiftMaster dealer to diagnose the problem and provide service.”
Replace
Consider replacement when a technician determines repair is not the right solution or you want features offered by a newer opener. My Garage Door Services says it can replace older units with smart Wi-Fi-enabled models and provide a feature tutorial after installation. LiftMaster Canada also lists built-in Wi-Fi and smartphone control as opener features. Neither source establishes that a particular model will fit every door, so confirm compatibility for your door and existing setup before choosing one.

Install
For a new installation, ask the installer to assess the door and opener compatibility together. My Garage Door Services lists opener installation as well as repair and replacement on its company website. Confirm the proposed scope, opener model, and any required work on the door system before approving installation.
What My Garage Door Services says it offers in Calgary
The company’s website describes Calgary garage-door repair and lists opener repair, replacement, and installation. It also says it offers smart Wi-Fi-enabled replacement openers and a feature tutorial after installation. These are the provider’s own service descriptions, not independently verified response times, workmanship, credentials, or customer outcomes.

The site mentions licensed and insured technicians, but those credentials have not been independently verified here. It also describes spring and cable work as hazardous and says it should be handled by qualified professionals with specialized training and tools. - Whether the opener is silent, makes a sound, or runs while the door stays still.
- Whether the door reverses, sticks, binds, or stops partway through travel.
- Whether the wall control and remote behave differently.
- Any visible obstruction or sensor misalignment, without touching springs, cables, or other tensioned hardware.
- The opener’s brand and model, if you can read them safely.
Ask whether the visit will include diagnosis of the door and hardware, not only the opener motor. If discussing replacement, request confirmation that the selected opener is suitable for your particular door.
Safety comes before troubleshooting
Garage doors are heavy, and springs and cables can be under substantial tension. The LiftMaster 8165 installation manual cautions against loosening, moving, or adjusting hardware under extreme tension and advises using a trained door-systems technician when the door binds, sticks, or is out of balance. Do not attempt spring or cable adjustments, or keep operating a door that appears unsafe.
For model-specific service, use the manual for the opener you own; the LiftMaster 8165 manual is not universal guidance for every opener. You can read the LiftMaster 8165 installation manual.
