Gearless vs. Geared Elevators: How to Choose for Your Building

Geared elevators use a reduction gearbox; gearless elevators connect the drive sheave directly to the motor. Learn how that difference affects project selection—and why it does not determine machine-room layout on its own.

Both geared and gearless elevators use traction: ropes pass over a drive sheave, with a counterweight as part of the system. The difference is how the motor turns that sheave. A geared elevator uses a reduction gearbox; a gearless elevator connects the sheave directly to the motor shaft. Neither is the universal choice: speed, traffic, capacity, layout, operating costs, and service support should guide the project decision.

What is the difference between geared and gearless elevators?

In a geared traction elevator, the motor turns a gearbox, which reduces speed and drives the sheave. In a gearless traction elevator, the sheave is coupled directly to the motor shaft. The gearbox is the defining mechanical distinction, not the presence or absence of ropes, a counterweight, or a machine room. Schindler and APPA describe these traction arrangements.

Geared vs. gearless elevators at a glance

Factor Geared traction Gearless traction
Drive train A reduction gearbox connects the motor to the drive sheave. The drive sheave connects directly to the motor shaft.
Typical applications Can suit some lower-speed, heavy-duty, mid-rise, large-capacity service, and freight applications. These are patterns, not strict limits. Often chosen for high-use buildings or applications where higher speed and performance matter; compact machines are also used in some MRL systems.
Energy The gearbox introduces transmission losses. Total elevator consumption depends on the complete installation and how it operates. Direct drive can improve transmission efficiency, but that does not establish a guaranteed whole-building energy saving.
Ride and noise Depend on the equipment, controls, installation, and isolation; no universal noise comparison is established here. Toshiba says gearless equipment paired with inverter control offers smoother acceleration and deceleration than geared equipment using a reducer. That is the manufacturer’s technical description, not a universal measured result.
Machine-room layout “Geared” alone does not determine whether a machine room is required. Compact gearless machines can support machine-room-less layouts, while traditional gearless machines can use machine rooms.
Maintenance Gearbox lubrication and bearing condition are relevant service considerations. SKF discusses lubricant contamination and its potential impact on bearing life and reliability. Gearless does not mean maintenance-free. Requirements depend on the selected equipment and service arrangement.
Cost Installed cost and lifecycle cost require project-specific bids and assumptions; a transferable universal price comparison is not established. Assess capital cost, energy, maintenance, space, and expected use over the project’s planning horizon; no universal payback is established.

For the transmission and efficiency distinction, see Toshiba’s traction-machine explainer. Its comparison does not establish a percentage saving for a particular building.

Does gearless mean machine-room-less?

No. “Gearless” describes the drive machine; “machine-room-less” (MRL) describes equipment location and system configuration. Compact gearless machines are used in MRL traction systems, but traditional full-size gearless machines may be installed in machine-room systems. APPA distinguishes compact MRL equipment from traditional gearless machines, and Schindler’s overview treats machine-room arrangement separately from drive type.

Where does each type fit?

Geared traction

Geared equipment remains relevant where the project calls for a suitable lower-speed or heavy-duty system. APPA says geared machines continue to be used generally for large-capacity service and freight elevators. SKF describes geared traction machines as typically slower than gearless machines and as a common alternative for heavy-duty, low-speed, or mid-rise applications.

Speed figures should be treated as source-specific examples, not design rules. SKF says geared traction machines can travel up to 2.5 m/s. A vendor comparison from Asco lists typical geared speeds of 0.5–1.75 m/s and gearless speeds of 1–10 m/s; those ranges differ and are not universal standards. Check the actual manufacturer’s submittals and project specifications for the proposed system.

Gearless traction

APPA describes traditional gearless traction machines as used in high-use buildings of 20 or more stories, commonly at 500–2,000 feet per minute. This is a broad application description, not a code threshold or a rule that every building of that height requires gearless equipment. APPA also says passenger elevators and standard-capacity service elevators that traditionally used geared hoist machines are increasingly being replaced by compact gearless MRL systems.

High-speed installations illustrate the capability of gearless traction without setting a target for ordinary projects. In 2021, APPA reported that elevators at Guangzhou CTF Finance Center operated at 1,260 m/min (just over 4,100 ft/min), surpassing the 1,230 m/min (4,000 ft/min) elevators at Shanghai Tower. Those figures are historical context from APPA’s 2021 account, not a claim about the current world record.

Is gearless more efficient, quieter, or smoother?

Removing the gearbox avoids its transmission losses, so direct drive can improve efficiency at the machine level. But elevator energy use depends on the complete system and its operating profile; a machine-level distinction alone cannot predict the building’s savings. The available sources do not establish a universal energy-saving percentage or payback period.

Ride quality and noise also depend on more than drive type, including the controller, installation, and vibration isolation. Toshiba specifically says its gearless traction machine, when used with inverter control, offers smoother acceleration and deceleration than a geared machine using a reducer. That attributed description is not evidence that every gearless installation will be quieter or feel smoother than every geared one.

How should a project team choose?

Do not select by floor count alone or assume one drive type will always cost less to own. Ask elevator manufacturers and contractors to compare proposals against the building’s operating needs and the service available locally.

  1. Define the duty. Document passenger and service traffic, required capacity, travel, expected speed, and whether the elevator will support freight or heavy-duty use.
  2. Set the layout constraints. Decide whether a machine room or MRL configuration is preferred or feasible. Evaluate this separately from geared versus gearless drive.
  3. Request comparable submittals. Ask bidders to identify the proposed machine and controller, rated capacity and speed, layout requirements, and relevant operating assumptions. Use project-specific manufacturer information rather than generic speed ranges.
  4. Compare lifecycle assumptions. Request the basis for projected energy use, routine maintenance, parts support, and expected service needs over the same planning horizon. The sources do not support a general maintenance-cost advantage or a universal installed-price difference for either type.
  5. Check local service capability. Confirm that qualified technicians, parts, and maintenance support are available for the specific equipment being proposed.
  6. Review the complete bid. Compare installed scope and lifecycle assumptions on an equivalent basis, including space and operating requirements, before choosing.

For maintenance planning, SKF’s elevator solutions brochure discusses lubricant contamination and its potential effect on bearing life and reliability. It is a maintenance consideration, not evidence that all geared machines have higher overall maintenance costs.

Are geared elevators obsolete?

No. APPA and SKF describe ongoing geared applications, including large-capacity service and freight uses and some heavy-duty, lower-speed, or mid-rise applications. At the same time, APPA says compact gearless MRL systems are increasingly replacing geared machines in some passenger and standard-capacity service applications. The trend does not make either option obsolete or establish a universal winner.
