Set the square’s flange against the table’s front edge and position it where the cut should begin; the square’s thickness then provides an edge to guide the work.
How to use a speed square as a temporary bandsaw guide
- Set the square on the table. Place its flange against the bandsaw table’s front edge.
- Position it for the cut. Move the square to the point where you want the cut to begin.
- Clamp it in place. The square becomes a removable guide for a workpiece lying flat on the table. The cited tip does not specify a clamp type or model.
WOOD Magazine’s 2017 tip says the square’s body is 1/4 inch thick and describes that edge as sufficient for most ripping tasks. That is the figure given in the article, not a specification verified for every speed square. The magazine restated the setup in 2019, again describing the square as a substitute when a bandsaw lacks a fence. What this workaround does—and does not establish
This is a simple clamp-on bandsaw guide for workpieces lying flat, not a universal replacement specification for every bandsaw fence or cut. The published tip does not give positioning dimensions, identify a compatible machine range, specify a clamp, or establish a tested safety procedure for different machines, stock shapes, or operating conditions.
Before using any improvised guide, confirm that the square and clamp can be secured without interfering with the blade or the workpiece, and follow the bandsaw manufacturer’s operating and safety instructions. If the setup cannot be secured and used without interference, use a suitable fence or another method appropriate to the machine and cut.
