Shellac is the material; French polishing is the application technique. It can bring out the color and figure of wood, but the result depends on careful surface preparation, a moving pad, and a light touch.
What French polishing is
The Royal Collection Trust defines French polish as “a process whereby many layers of shellac, dissolved in denatured alcohol, are applied to wood furniture using a material pad called a rubber.” The term describes a method rather than a separate coating: shellac provides the finish, and the pad applies it gradually.
Traditional recipes and sequences vary. Shellac may be prepared from flakes dissolved in alcohol or used as a suitable prepared polish. There is no single universal shellac concentration, coat count, or drying schedule established for every project.
What you need
- Shellac: flakes to dissolve in alcohol, or shellac polish suited to the method you intend to use.
- Pad materials: a soft cotton core and a clean, lint-free, tightly woven cloth cover. A ready-made polishing rubber is optional; you can make a pad from these materials.
- Surface-preparation supplies: fine abrasive paper appropriate to the wood and its existing condition. There is no universal grit schedule; use care around veneer so you do not sand through it.
- Alcohol: the shellac solvent, and sometimes a sparing aid in the final spiriting stage. Follow the product label and local safety directions, and work with suitable ventilation; solvent formulations vary.
- Optional pumice: used in some traditional methods for pore filling, but not required in every approach.
How to French polish
1. Prepare and test the surface
Practice on scrap from the same wood before working on the finished piece. Start with a smooth, clean surface: a glossy finish can make small defects more visible. Choose preparation steps suitable for the substrate, and take particular care not to cut through veneer.

2. Charge the pad lightly
Prepare the cloth pad with shellac, avoiding an overloaded pad. The outer cover should be clean, lint-free, and tightly woven to help limit fibers and visible application marks.
3. Apply thin passes and build gradually
Move the pad across the surface in thin, even passes. Keep it moving rather than stopping with the pad against the wood. Let the shellac dry between stages, then add more layers gradually. The number of layers and the intervals between them depend on the chosen method and working conditions.

4. Treat pore filling as a method choice
Some traditional sequences work pumice and oil into the surface while filling pores, then apply further shellac passes. This is one approach, not a mandatory step in every French-polishing method.
5. Use restraint in the final spiriting stage
Some methods finish with a very light pass using alcohol. Use very little and keep the pad moving: excess alcohol or a pad left resting on the surface can cut through or burn through the shellac, as the U.S. government manual warns.

What the finish is good at—and where it needs care
The Royal Collection Trust notes that French polish can produce a particularly beautiful gloss that brings out the colors in the grain. It also reports some resistance to heat or food spills, but that does not establish broad protection against water, alcohol, heat, or heavy use. The same conservation overview says badly damaged layers must be removed and reapplied.
Shellac is a natural resin finish, and its condition can change with the wood and its environment. The Canadian Conservation Institute explains that natural resin finishes can crack or loosen as wood expands and contracts, and that light exposure gradually degrades them. French polishing is therefore valued for appearance and traditional use, rather than as a promise of a highly durable, low-maintenance modern coating.

Before cleaning or refinishing old furniture
Do not assume an antique has shellac simply because it looks glossy. First establish what finish is present, whether it is stable, and whether it has been altered or treated. The Canadian Conservation Institute advises caution and qualified assistance when in doubt; that is especially prudent for a valuable or unstable object. Cleaning or stripping the wrong finish can cause damage, and a badly damaged French-polish layer may require removal and reapplication rather than a simple surface treatment.
