Fremantle College opened in Beaconsfield on 1 February 2018, following the merger of South Fremantle and Hamilton senior high schools. More than 1,000 students attended during the college’s first week, according to a report published the next day—a historical opening-week figure, not its current enrolment.
Why Fremantle College was created
South Fremantle and Hamilton senior high schools were merged after enrolments at both schools had dwindled and local residents called for better secondary education options. The new college opened on the former South Fremantle Senior High School site in Beaconsfield. Education Minister Sue Ellery officially opened it on 1 February 2018. Bethany Hiatt’s report for PerthNow / The West Australian, published 2 February 2018, describes the first-week attendance as more than 1,000 students.
What the $30 million funded
The Western Australian Government spent $30 million on facilities and renovations at the former South Fremantle site, according to Hiatt’s 2018 report. The upgrades and facilities described at the time included:
- Science laboratories
- A television studio with a green screen
- Specialist marine-studies facilities
- A full commercial kitchen attached to a restaurant
These are the facilities identified in the opening-era report; they should not be treated as a complete inventory of the campus today.

What the college offers now
Fremantle College’s current website describes Year 7–12 academic and vocational pathways, with specialist programs in Marine Studies, ICT and Contemporary Music. Its facilities page also lists a performing arts centre, science rooms, visual arts and media facilities, a mechatronics lab and student services areas. The school’s 2025 annual report, published in 2026, records 1,312 students in 2025. That figure provides a dated enrolment snapshot; it is not the same measure as the more-than-1,000 students reported as attending in the opening week of 2018. Fremantle College annual reports.

What happened to the former Hamilton site?
The 2018 report said the former Hamilton site would be sold for housing. The available reporting does not confirm whether that sale took place or what was ultimately built there, so its eventual disposition cannot be stated as fact.

Families considering the college should use its current enrolment information rather than rely on details from the 2018 opening report. The school directs families to check local-intake eligibility and application instructions; specialist and academy programs have their own application processes.
