These six practical steps support better care, but they cannot guarantee a set number of extra days: vase life varies by flower and home conditions.
1. Start with a clean vase
Wash a previously used vase with hot, soapy water and rinse it before arranging the flowers. Residue and microbes left in the container can contaminate the water and shorten vase life, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
2. Remove leaves below the waterline
Strip off only the leaves that would sit underwater. Foliage submerged in the vase decays and can dirty the water, so removing it helps keep the arrangement cleaner. Both UF/IFAS Extension and the Associated Press recommend this step.
3. Make a fresh, clean cut
Before arranging, recut each stem with a clean, sharp knife or clippers. Use a tool that cuts cleanly rather than crushing the stem; sharp floral snips are one option, but a suitable household tool is enough. Kansas State University Extension also recommends recutting stems when you replace the water. See its rose-care guidance for details.

- Floralife Flower Food 300 5gm
- flower preservative
- each pkg makes 1 pint of solution
Do not smash the stem ends. Jessica Damiano, gardening writer for the AP, notes that “Despite what you might have read, smashing the cut ends of flower stems does not increase water uptake.”
4. Use flower food as directed
Mix cut-flower food, also called floral preservative, according to the packet or product label. Iowa State Extension explains that floral preservative helps keep water clean and supplies carbohydrates to developing flowers. More concentrate is not necessarily better: the University of Illinois Extension likewise advises following the package directions in its bouquet-care guidance.

5. Keep the vase water fresh
Change the water regularly and maintain its level. If the vase becomes dirty, clean it before refilling. Iowa State Extension identifies regular water changes as one of the most effective ways to prolong vase life, and UF/IFAS also advises keeping the water fresh. When changing it, recut the stems with a clean, sharp tool.

Place the bouquet away from direct heat and drafts, which can hasten wilting. Keep it away from ripening fruit as well: ethylene released by ripening fruit speeds flower aging, according to the AP’s cut-flower care guide. UF/IFAS also notes that heat reduces flower life.
