The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) does not recommend Digitalis purpurea as a repellent or treatment; its plant profile instead lists aphids and leaf and bud eelworm as possible pests. Grow foxglove for its flowers, not as a way to protect nearby plants.
What foxglove can—and cannot—do for pest control
Foxglove is an ornamental flowering plant, not a substantiated pest-control solution. The RHS profile identifies it as susceptible to aphids and leaf and bud eelworm, rather than listing it as a plant that repels or treats garden pests. The RHS also describes foxgloves as attractive to bumblebees, which can make them a choice for a wildlife or cottage garden; that is not evidence they protect neighboring crops from pests.
This conclusion reflects the scope of the RHS guidance cited here, not proof that no study anywhere has examined foxglove and pests. The available sources do not establish a foxglove-based treatment or a measurable efficacy rate.
Grow foxglove for the right reasons
Common foxglove is a biennial or short-lived perennial, typically 1–2 metres tall, according to the RHS. It self-sows and suits cottage and informal gardens, wildlife gardens, borders, and wildflower meadows.

- 🌱 Seed Prep for Better Germination: Cold stratify foxglove seeds by placing them in a moist paper towel or sand and refrigerating for 7-14 days. Sow seeds on the soil surface and press lightly without covering, as foxglove seeds require light to germinate.
- 🌸 Tall Biennial Blooms – Foxglove plants grow 2.5-5 ft tall with bell-shaped flowers in pink and white shades.
- 🐝 Pollinator Friendly – Attracts hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies to cottage gardens and woodland borders.
- 🌿 Easy to Grow – Cold stratify for best results. Thrives in partial shade with moist, well-drained soil.
- ♻ Self-Seeding Plants – Once established, foxglove reseeds naturally and requires minimal maintenance.
- Site: Foxglove prefers humus-rich soil in partial shade, but can grow in full sun. Avoid very wet or very dry conditions.
- Sowing: Sow seed in place in late spring, or start it in trays in late spring and plant out in late summer.
- After flowering: Cut plants back after flowering. Deadhead regularly if you do not want them to set seed.
These are cultivation recommendations, not evidence of pest-repellent effects. The RHS profile for common foxglove and its guide to biennial foxgloves provide further growing information.
Choose pest control by identifying the pest
First work out which pest is affecting which plant. Then choose a method suited to that pest and the damage you are seeing. The RHS recommends non-chemical approaches for most garden situations, including:

- SPOTTED ESSENCE. Effect of theatrical presentation - a hypnotic spectacle inside each bell with a diameter of 3 inches - a widely open throat with a spotted trap-throat. - Manual removal: Remove insects by hand or take off affected plant parts when practical.
- Barriers: Physically exclude the pest from the plants it targets.
- Traps and deterrents: Use an approach suited to the pest rather than relying on an unverified companion plant.
- Cultivation changes: Adjust growing practices where they can reduce the pest problem.
- Biological controls: Consider natural predators or parasites. For example, ladybirds feed on aphids.
Methods differ in the pests they target, the effort they require, and their possible effects on beneficial wildlife. The RHS advises minimizing pesticide use: chemical controls are a last resort, should be targeted, and must be used according to product instructions. An insecticide can affect beneficial organisms as well as the pest, so “natural” or homemade does not automatically mean safe or selective. See the RHS guidance on understanding and avoiding chemical use.

Do not make food, tea, remedies, or homemade sprays from foxglove. The RHS marks the plant toxic if eaten and toxic to pets, and advises gloves and other protective equipment when handling it. Poison Control warns that all parts may be poisonous and potentially deadly if swallowed; foxglove can affect heart rate and rhythm. Do not induce vomiting after a possible ingestion. Follow local emergency guidance and contact a poison center if a person may have swallowed any part of the plant. Read Poison Control’s foxglove safety guidance.
