Flamestick is an AceCamp firestarter made from recycled thermoplastic that was also promoted as fuel for camping stoves. Historical reporting describes its burn and heat claims, but the available sources do not establish current safety guidance for cooking, food contact, or use in enclosed spaces. That distinction matters: a material that can burn is not automatically a suitable cooking fuel.
What Flamestick is
New Atlas identified Flamestick as a recycled-thermoplastic product associated with Germany’s AceCamp. Its August 8, 2012 report described each stick as approximately 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) long and 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) wide. The article presented it as a firestarter for campfires and stoves, and reported that AceCamp also claimed it could be used as cooking fuel. New Atlas’s 2012 report is historical coverage, not current product documentation.
What the reported burn figures do—and do not—show
New Atlas relayed AceCamp’s claims that one stick could reach 626°F (330°C), a pair could exceed 800°F (426°C), and a stick would burn for about five minutes. These were company claims reported in 2012, not standardized, independently verified performance measurements.
The article’s writer, C.C. Weiss, reported that a sample stick lit quickly and burned for about seven minutes. That was a limited sample observation, not a controlled test or a guarantee of how a current product will perform. The same report attributes to AceCamp managing director Darko Leo an anecdote about frying an egg in two minutes and 15 seconds using a solid-fuel backpacking stove powered by Flamesticks. An anecdote does not establish general cooking performance or safety.

Can you use Flamestick to cook?
The historical article says cooking fuel was among the product’s intended uses, but the sources available here do not establish current manufacturer safety documentation for cooking. In particular, they do not substantiate food-contact suitability, ventilation requirements, emissions, or safe use in an enclosed space. Do not treat the historical cooking claim or egg anecdote as a safety recommendation. Without current, product-specific manufacturer guidance, suitability for cooking remains unestablished.
Odor, residue, and wet-weather claims
Weiss said the sample had a noticeable smell, contrary to the company’s reported “no smell” claim, and left a small amount of melted residue that had to be repeatedly relit to burn off. These are observations from one limited test in 2012, not a comprehensive emissions or safety assessment.

New Atlas also reported the claimed advantage that the plastic material would not soak up water like conventional tinder. A retailer listing for the AceCamp 3510 20-stick pack repeats claims of waterproofness, clean burning, and a six-to-eight-minute burn time; those are retailer descriptions, not independent verification. X-Boundaries’ AceCamp Flamesticks listing was observed in a search result crawled around five months before this article was written, so its details and availability may have changed.
What “made from recycled plastic” establishes
Recycled material may be a product attribute, but it does not by itself prove a net environmental benefit. The 2012 report did not state the recycled-content percentage or provide an independently verified life-cycle analysis. The available information therefore does not establish how much recycled material Flamestick contains or how its overall environmental impact compares with other firestarters or fuels.
