To fold a bandsaw blade into three compact coils, hold the loop with its teeth pointing away, secure the bottom against the floor with a foot, then rotate and lower the hand holding the top. WOOD Magazine’s reader-contributed method says the blade forms three coils after roughly three-quarters to one full revolution.
How to fold a bandsaw blade
This technique is attributed by WOOD Magazine to reader Werner Zinn of Orlando, Florida. It is a compact-storage technique, not a manufacturer’s manual or a complete safety standard.
- Position the blade: Hold the blade loop in front of you with one hand, keeping the teeth pointed away from you.
- Secure the bottom: Put a foot inside the loop and hold the blade against the floor.
- Rotate and lower the top: As the foot secures the loop, rotate and lower the hand holding the top. The blade should collapse into three coils after roughly three-quarters to one full revolution.
WOOD Magazine says to wear a glove if one is handy, but does not specify a glove type or claim that a glove eliminates risk. Work deliberately and stop if the blade is not controlled; the article does not give further safety procedures.
Keeping the folded blade in storage
A Woodworking Stack Exchange discussion mentions putting coiled blades in a drawer, hanging one in an out-of-the-way corner, or using a wire tie to retain the coils. These are community suggestions, not verified manufacturer recommendations or proof of a safest storage method. Choose a location and restraint that keep the sharp blade contained and away from people.
