For a solid-wood tabletop, lid, or door, a breadboard end is a cross-grain rail fitted to the panel’s end. Five common approaches are full-length tongue and groove, sliding dovetail, stopped tongue and groove, mortise and tenon, and a laminated rail used to simplify parts of the last two methods. Each must help control cupping without preventing the panel from expanding and shrinking across its width.
What a breadboard end does—and why movement matters
A breadboard end covers the panel’s end grain and helps resist cupping. It does not stop seasonal dimensional change. Wood moves more across the grain than along it, so a rail fixed rigidly across a solid-wood panel can restrict that movement and cause problems.
WOOD Magazine’s 2021 planning figures assume an annual moisture-content change of 8 percentage points: about 1/4 inch of width movement per 12 inches for flatsawn panels, and about 1/8 inch per 12 inches for quartersawn panels. These are estimates, not guarantees for every species or room. The final environment and the wood itself affect movement, as Chuck Bender notes in Popular Woodworking’s 2022 overview.
The 2021 guide gives a 2–3-inch rail as typical, with the groove about one-third of the panel thickness and two-thirds of the rail width in depth. Treat those as starting proportions, not a substitute for fitting the joint to your stock and design.

Plan the rail length around the panel’s seasonal state
WOOD Magazine illustrates the effect with a 24-inch-wide flatsawn panel built in winter at maximum shrinkage: its example calls for a rail 1/2 inch longer than the panel, projecting 1/4 inch at each side. For a panel built in summer humidity at maximum expansion, the example makes the rail ends flush with the panel edges. The relevant allowance depends on when the panel is at its narrowest or widest, and on the expected movement in its eventual setting.
Compare the five approaches
| Approach | Joint and appearance | Movement or best-fit consideration | Distinctive tools or construction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-length tongue and groove | Panel tongue enters an open-ended rail groove; described as the simplest approach. | Dowels secure the rail; outer holes are elongated and outer dowels are glued to only one groove cheek to allow movement. | Dowels; elongated outer holes. |
| Sliding dovetail | Decorative and structural joint. | Guide advises pinning at the center and not gluing the joint. | Dovetail router bit. |
| Stopped tongue and groove | Conceals the joint at the panel shoulder. | Tongue ends are notched to fit the stopped groove, then pared flush at the shoulder. | Upcut spiral bit for the groove; chisel for paring. |
| Mortise and tenon | Tenons join the panel to the rail; haunches reinforce the groove cheeks. | Recommended by the guide for panels wider than 24 inches or thinner than 3/4 inch. | Haunched tenons and mating mortises. |
| Laminated rail | Rail-making method, not a separate panel-to-rail movement strategy. | Used to simplify rail construction for stopped-groove or tenoned approaches. | Three glued laminations; center lamination is notched for mortises and a shallow groove. |
1. Full-length tongue and groove: the straightforward option
The panel’s tongue runs into a groove that opens through the ends of the rail. WOOD Magazine describes this as its simplest method. Dowels hold the rail in place, but the outer holes are elongated and the outer dowels are glued to only one groove cheek. That detail matters: fixing both sides tightly across the panel can impede cross-grain movement.

After glue-up, a flush-cut saw is a suitable tool for trimming projecting dowel pins flush, as described in Woodcraft’s joint guide.
2. Sliding dovetail: a visible, structural joint
A sliding dovetail adds a distinctive joint profile while mechanically connecting rail and panel. The WOOD Magazine guide specifies a dovetail bit for cutting it and advises pinning the joint only at the center rather than gluing it. This method suits a design where the joint can be part of the appearance; it is not a reason to lock the panel’s full width against seasonal change.

A stopped groove does not run out through the rail ends, so the tongue ends must be notched to fit. The guide uses an upcut spiral router bit to make the groove, then a chisel to pare the notched tongue flush at the shoulder. This adds fitting work in exchange for a concealed joint line.
4. Mortises and tenons: reinforce wide or thin panels
For a panel wider than 24 inches or thinner than 3/4 inch, the guide recommends haunched tenons and matching mortises. The haunches reinforce the rail’s groove cheeks, which would otherwise be relatively thin. This addresses joint strength and geometry; the cross-grain movement still needs to be accommodated in the design.

5. Laminated rail: a way to build the rail
A laminated rail is a construction shortcut for the rail used with stopped-groove or tenoned methods, rather than a fifth independent rule for attaching a panel. Stack and glue three laminations; notch the center layer to create the mortises and a shallow groove. The laminated build-up provides the rail’s internal features without cutting every feature into one solid piece.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by appearance, panel size, and shop setup
- Choose full-length tongue and groove when a straightforward joint is the priority and you can make the outer dowel holes and glue placement accommodate movement.
- Choose a sliding dovetail when its decorative profile is desirable and you can cut it accurately with a dovetail bit.
- Choose stopped tongue and groove when you want the joint hidden at the shoulder and are prepared to notch and pare the tongue ends.
- Consider haunched mortises and tenons for panels wider than 24 inches or thinner than 3/4 inch, following the guide’s reinforcement recommendation.
- Use a laminated rail if its three-layer construction helps make the stopped groove or mortises for your chosen joint.
No single method is best for every project. Decide first how visible the joint should be, whether the panel’s width or thickness calls for reinforced groove cheeks, and which method-specific cutting and fitting tools you have. Then detail the attachment so the breadboard end helps control cupping without trapping the panel’s cross-grain movement.
